This invention relates to improvementsin means for elevating the type of airplane known as gliders for the purpose of initiating the flight of the same.
The pricipal object of the invention is to provide an economically constructed and simply arranged apparatus whereby the glider can be elevated to the desired height and thereafter by a manipulation of a control cord or other actuating means the glider can be readily released to accomplish the desired gliding action. v
A further object is to provide an apparatus that is positive in operation, durable and one which can be readily and quickly manip-' ulated. 7
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, 7
The figure is a side elevation of the apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same'elevated in proximity to a captive balloon preparatory to impelling the glider into flight. p
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the.
numeral 6 designates a captiveballoon which has depending therefrom a sheave or pulley 7 over which there is trained an endless cable 8 in turn connected to a second sheave or pulley 9 that is fastened to the ground in any convenient manner. The numeral 10 designates as a whole, the frame that serves as the medium for retaining thereon any type of glider 11. This frame embodies in its construction a cross arm 12 that has connected thereto reinforcing bars 13 and 14. The
frame is pivotally connected as at 15 to the front portion of the endless cable which portion of the cable, likewise beneath the point of pivotal connection, is received in slots or recesses formed in the wings 1'7 and 18 of the glider.
For the purpose of retaining the glider on the cross arm preparatory to the flight of thesanie I employ on the topwing of the glider and centrally thereof, a pair of spaced vertical arms 19; each of which has mounted I thereon aflange roller 20,1 7 The numeral 2l designates a pull rjopeor cable thatisj connected as at 122 to thecross ttI'DT'lQ, which cable is actuatedby theioccupant of the glider when he" desires to ini tiate flight of theship, [It willfbeflnoted that the crossarm when actuated by'theoccupant' through the medium'of the pull cable 21 will cause the cross arm to assume asubs'tantially' horizontal position to release the glider for flightl'lj 'j f 'c v The manner of raising the'frame on the endless-cable 8 is obvious, for actuation of the cable either by means of a conventional Wench or other similar device will cause the cable to be reaved over the pulleys 7 and 9 and will convey the frame and glider thereon to the desired height. V 1
Assuming that the glider hasbeen elevated to the position illustrated, in the drawing, the operator then pulls the cable or control'rope 21and the frame will move from its full line position to the dotted line position, and the carrier wheels or rollers 20 traveling over the cross arm'12 will release the glider'from the frame and initiate the flight of the plane.
1 Should it be desired to release a miniature ortoy glider ora glider that has no occupant therein the control cord could be readily lengthened to contact the ground and from a this point actuation of the control cord will readily release theglider for flight. It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the 1 material, size, shape and arrangement of glider carrying frame connected to said cable and adapted upon manual actuation to release the glider therefrom. a
2. The combination with a captive balloon, an apparatus for elevating a glider plane to propel the same into flight, comprising an endless cable connected tothe balloon, a glider carryingframe pivotally connected to said cable, and'a control cable'connec'ted to said frame and under the control of the occupant of the glider for releasing the gliderwfrom said frame.
' 3. The combinationwitha captive balloon,
of an apparatus for raising a glider plane to propel the same into flight, said apparatus in-" eluding means for elevating the balloon, a glider carryingflframe mounted on said last mentioned means and adapted upon actuation of said frame-by theoc'cupantof the glider to propel the plane into flight.
4. The combination with a captive balloon,
of an apparatus for elevating and lowering a glider'plane, said apparatus including an endless cableconnectedto'the balloon, and a glider'carrying frame carried by said endless cable, and means carried by said frame for releasing the glider therefrom to propel the plane into flight. I v
' In testimony whereof I aflixvmy signature.
