IMPROVEMENT IN STUMP-EXTRACTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,487, dated June 6, 1876 application filed May 5, 1876.
.ments in stump-extractors or grabbing-machines, its object being to furnish a convenient and efficient machine whereby stumps and trees may be extracted from the ground with more ease and a less expenditure of power than in machines of this class as heretofore constructed.
My invention consists in an improved construction of the fulcrum-pin and its bearing in the axle, as hereinafter set forth.
The invention also consists in the combination, with the truck which carries the lever and the framing, of two beams adapted to set under the axle at each end, and be secured thereto by means of step-blocks, the forward ends of said beam being secured to each other and the front of the truck by means of a rope, chain, or other connecting device, the two forming a firm and solid base for the apparatus, as fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, the figure represents a perspective view of my invention.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the axle of the truck, mounted on wheels B and G, a tongue or beam extending from the front of the same. To the center and on top of said axle is fulcrumed or journaled a long cam-lever, D. Said lever consists of a beam of wood or other suitable material, with a cam-shaped rear end, protected by a metallic band, d, at
its edge, and mounted upon a cylindrical ful-- crum-pin, E, which is journaled in semi-cylindrical bearings formed in the axle, being socured therein by means of the metallic straps F. Along the top of the lever D extends longitudinally a metallic rod or stay, secured at one end to the end of the hook G, to which the clutching devices are attached, or directly to the lever, and at the other to the end of said lever, an abutment or block, H, being interposed between said bar and the lever, forming a triangular brace for strengthening said lever. At the front end of said lever, on each side of the same, is mounted a pulley, I, the
object of which will be hereinafter explained. The letter K represents a beam secured to the frame or truck between the lower ends of the uprights L, attached to the axle, and under a cross-bar, M, secured to said uprights, the lever being held in place by means of a looselyattached link, N. The forward end of said beam K is provided with pulleys 0, similar to the pulleys on the lever D. Said pulleys are connected by a system of cord or chain gearing passing over the same, the free end of the cord or chain being carried backward under a pulley, 1?, attached to the axle, the said cord or chain being provided with hitching devices at the ends, by means of which a horse or horses or other draft-animal can be secured to the same for the purpose of applying power to the lever D. The beam K is attached to the forward end of the tongue or beam 0 by means of a chain, R, which holds it in proper position while the upper lever is being drawn down. The letter S represents two beams, firmly secured at their lower ends to the tongue 0, and at their upper ends to the uprights L, forming a triangular frame, in the upper partof which are journaled two pulleys, T, connected, by means of chain or rope gearing, with two similar pulleys, T, on the beam D, the free end of the chain extending downward from one of the pulleys T within reach of the operator, in order to admit of power being applied to raise the lever D, which may be done by hand or other suitable power. The letter U represents two beams, each provided with an upwardly-projecting yoke, V, near its rear end. Said beams are adapted to set under the axle near each end of the same, and be secured under the projecting plates W, attached to the same by means of step-blocks Z. The forward ends of said beams are provided with staples A, by means of which they can be secured together and to the forward end of the tongue 0 by a chain or rope, or other suitable connecting device.
The operation of my improved apparatus is as follows: The lever D is elevated by means of the elevatiu g gearing, after which the clutch O is secured around the stump or tree in proper position. Power is then applied to the end of the chain or rope passing over the pul- I leys I and O, and the lever D is drawn down toward the beam K.
The lever thus operated exerts an immense power, and speedily starts the stump or tree,

In combination with the truck which carries the levers and framing, the two supporting-levers adapted to set under the axle, secured thereto by means of step-block, and united at their forward ends under the forward end of the tongue of the truck, forming a solid base for the same, substantially as described.
