METHOD OF TURNING CARRIAGE-HUBS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,846, dated July 21, 185'?.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER RrcKART, of Schoharie, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Turning Hubs for WVheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a lan or top view of ditto.

M invention consists in having the gearing, hy which motion is communicated from the driving or power shaft to the mandrel on which the stuff to be turned is placed, fitted in a vibrating frame, the lower end of which is placed and allowed to move freely on the driving or power shaft, and the uplper end connected to a sliding frame on w 1ch the mandrel is laced, the above parts being arranged as wil be hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the stuff and cutter head may both be rotated from one and the same driving or power shaft, and the stuff fed to the cutter head without at all interfering with the gearing by which said stuff is rotated.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct -my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a rectan ular frame on the u per end of which a s aft or arbor B is aced transversely. On this arbor a cutter liead C is fitted, the cutters (a) of which are made to conform to the intended pattern or shape of the hub to be turned, the cutter head being of polygonal form and the cutters n riage E is placed, the outer end of which is ivoted to a lever F, which is attached to the ame A at (c). This carriage is allowed to work freely back and forth on the frame A and on its inner end a mandrel G is placed,

On the shaft D the lower end of a frame H 1s placed or fitted loosely. This frame is constructed of two bent or kneed side pieces (e) (e) connected by cross ties. The form or shape of one of the side pieces is shown clearly in Fig. 1. In the frame H two shafts (f) (f) are placed, both of which are shown in Fig. 2. 0n one end of the shaft D a pinion (g) is placed, and this pinion gears into a toothed wheel (h) which is placed at one end of the shaft in the frame D, and at the opposite end o shaft (f) a pinion (t) is placed, said pinion gearing into a toothed wheel (j) on one end of the shaft (f), said shaft also having a pinion (7c) gearing into a corresponding pinion (Z) on the mandrel. The ends of the shaft (f) are fitted in the lower ends of arms (fm) (m) the up er ends of which are placed on the mandref)G. n
I, is the stuff which is placed on the mandrel G. The carriage E is secured at any desired point on the frame A by means of a pawl (a which is attached to the carria-ge E catching into a rack (b) on the frame A.
From the above description of parts it will be seen that by having the mandrel G connected by means of the gearing in the frame H, with the driving or power' shaft D as described, motion may be given to both the cutter head C and stuff I, from the same shaft D, and at the saine time the carriage E may be moved by the o erator toward the cutter head and the stu consequently fed to the cutters without interfering with the gearing which rotates the stuff7 By this improvement the machine is rendered quite simple and effective.
The rotatory cutter head has long been used for the same or equivalent purposes and is a well known device; but I am not aware that a cutter head, and mandrel on which the stuff to be turned is placed have both been driven with variable or different speeds from the same power shaft and the carriage in which the mandrel is placed1 allowed to slide or move while the parts are in operation, so that the "stuff may be fed to the cutters.
