Description

Dec. 9, 1930. 'B, c, BOOTH 1,784,620
' TOILET SEAT Filed Nov. 2, 1927 v Ill/I/l/I/ll/l/ Ill/I/II/ll/ Patented Dec. 9, 1930 UNITE]? STATES I PATENT OFFICE BYRON C. BOOTH, OF MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRUNSWICK- BALKE-COLLENDER COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELA- rorLn'r SEAT Application filed November 2, 1927. Serial No. 230,537.
My invention relates to toilet seats, and more particularly to the type known as open front and rear seats.
Open front and rear seats are well known for their unusually high sanitary qualities,
but the dificulty has always been in making them suficiently strong to withstand the rigorous conditions of rough usage. Because of the narrowness of the side pieces they have but small surface contact with the hinge plates to which they are secured and consequently, there is a tendency to tear loose from these plates.
One object of my invention is to. obviate this diificulty by providing a seat of the type described which will be especially strong and durable.
A further objectof my invention is to provide a. member having the shape of an open front and rear toilet seat and composed of a plastic composition, and having a hinge element imbedded therein and covered thereby.
A still further object is to provide such a seat in which the insert and hinge lugs are one integral member.-
Still a further object is to provide a method for the production oi a seat having the characteristics described.
Other objects and advantages will become ap arent as the description proceeds.
eferring to the drawings forming a part of this specification,
Fig. 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of a seat embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, partly broken away, and
Fig. 4 shows a horizontal sectional view of a modified form of my invention.
The toilet seat of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 comprises two wing-shaped cores 1 of laminated wood. A pair of inserts 2 are provided and one is embedded in each of the cores. A hinge element 3 is integral with the inserts and the hinge element and inserts may be a malleable iron casting or may be made of other suitable material.
The inserts havecorrugations 4 thereon for.
gripping the cores and are perforated to receive pins 5.
The hinge element has shoulders 6 thereon which engage the ends of the cores.
A coating 7 of plastic material such as'hard rubber, a phenolic condensation product, nitrocellulose etc. covers the cores and extends over the hinge elements, presenting a continuous and unbroken surface, particularly along the lines of juncture of the cores and hinge element.
The hinge element has openings 8 therein through which a pintle 9cextends, supported by standards 10.
The cores need not be laminated 'but may be in one piece and in fact may be made of different substances heretofore used in the art suchas ground cork, wood shavings incorporated in a binder, or a che'apergrade of rubber. Or the core may be omitted and the wing portions may be made merely of a plastic material such as the coating 7 is composed of, and the inserts may be imbedded directly therein. I
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the core 21 is hollowed out in the rear so as to form a cavity 22, having side walls 23. This operation may conveniently be accomplished by a chain mortising machine. An insert 24; having exactly the shape of the cavity is then driven into it, the insert being integrally east with the hinge element 25, as described.
above forthe other embodiment. A coating of hard rubber 26 is molded over thecores and hinge element.
This embodiment forms a very rigid union between the inserts and cores, due to the fact that the former are surrounded on all sides by the material of the cores, excepting at the rear, while the necessity for pins to insure such a union and prevent angling of'the core with respect to the hinge element is eliminated.
Fig. at also shows a modification of the hinge, in which a screw pintle 27 extends through the eye 28 and the supporting standard 29 and is threaded into a tubular portion 25 of the hinge element. This arrangement simplifies the construction somewhat by eliminating the long pintle and nuts shownin Fig.-
1 and, since the pintles are screwed flush with the eye, the arrangement is especially neat and sanitary.
The coating which it will be observed is of substantial thickness possesses considerable inherent strength and assists the described metallic inserts in obtaining a secure joint between the hinge elements and the cores notwithstanding the narrowness of the sides of the seat. This combined action of the coating and inserts prevents the hinge element from tearing loose and the coating by projecting outwardly from the cores over the connection and hinge element effectively seals the cores and thereby prevents moisture from attacking the cores, thus adding greatly to the naturally high sanitary qualities of the open front and rear seat. x
Obviously the inventive idea set forth in the claims may be embodied in constructions considerably different from that illustrated in the drawingsand described in detail, and the specific devices illustrated may be modi fled in many particulars without departing from the invention.
By the designation open front and rear type as used in the specification and claims, 18 meant a seat in which the sides or wings are spaced apart at both the front and rear of the seat, the connection between the wings at the rear of the seat having no seating body supporting function and being spaced rearwardly from the seat proper or body supporting area, whereby within said area there is a rearwardly disposed space between the wings as Well as a frontal space.
