The backs of the jaws 14 fit in the grooves formed in the inner face of the surrounding collar 11 which grooves converge downwardly as shown in Figure 2 and from this it will be readily understood that upon threading the sleeve 7 inwardly upon the head 3 the collar 11 will be drawn inwardly also and will cause the lower ends .of the jaws 14 to be 3 moved together, the inner faces of the jaws being serrated to assist them in shank of a bit member. 7
The gear encasing head 2 comprises a hollow body mounted upon the upper end of gripping the the head 3, the; lower wall 16 of this body being removable as shown, for access to the interior. At diametrically opposite points upon the casing side wall, sleeves 17 and 18 are formed which project from the wall and the sleeve 17 is closed at its inner end forming the socket 19, the wall of which is provided with screw threads, while' 'the sleeve 18 opens directly through to the'interior of the casing, as indicated at 20.
The outer end of the extendedsleeve 17 is provided with screw threads while at diametrically opposite points, inwardly of the screw threads, is formed in the outer face of the sleeve, grooves 21 which communicate with passages 22 leading through'the wall of the casing to the interior thereof. In each of thepa'ssages 22 is a pawl 23, the inner end of each pawl projecting to the central portion of the casing while the other end thereof has a finger-24 which extends outwardly, and normally lies in a groove 21in the adjacent sleeve. These pawls are pivotally held in position by pin members25. Surrounding the inner portion of the sleeve 17 is a pawl actuating or controlling ring 26, the inner face of which is provided with notches 27 (Figure 5) into which the pawl fingers 24 are permitted to move under certain conditions hereinafter described.
A retaining ring 28 is threaded upon the outer end of the sleeve 17 to hold the pawl controlling ring 26 in the proper position.
The sleeve extension 18 has a cap 29 threaded thereover, which cap is of greater length than the sleeve and has an aperture 30formed through the outer end thereof. When the cap 29 is threaded into position as shown in Figure 3 the face 31 is formed to receive the surrounding flange 32 of a power shaft 33, the inner end of which is slotted as indicated at 34 for engagement with the rib 35 of the stub shaft36 positioned in the inner end of the passage 20 through the sleeve body 18. This power shaft 33 is attached when the-brace struca is fixed by the pin member 39.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that by shifting the pawl controlling ring 26 so that both pawl lingers 24 might shiftinto the notches 27 of the ring, the pawls will be permitted to engage the ratchet wheel 42 and any turning movement given to the casing 2 will be imparted, through the shaft 37 to the chuck body 1. Shifting of the pawl controlling ring 36 will permit the turning of the casing in one direction to carry with it the chuck 1 while allowing the casing to idle in the opposite direction and the ring can also be shifted to permit the casing to revolve freely about the shaft 37 without turning the chuck body 1, as will be readily understood.
Mounted upon the top of the casing 2 is a nut body 43 having a stud 44 upon the under side thereof and adapted to be threaded into a threaded recess in the upper portion of the shaft 37 The top surface of this nut is provided with a threaded recess or bore for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The usual bit brace crank is indicated generally by the numeral 45 and the arm 46 of this crank has its free end threaded for engagement in the bore 19 of the sleeve extension 17" to permit the use of the brace by hand in the usual manner. This crank arm 46 may be removed for the conversion of the tool to power use in the following manner.
The power shaft 33 isattached to the stub shaft 36 in the manner already described, and there is then employed in conjunction with the structures 1 and 2 an automatic feed mechanism indicated generally by the numeral 47, which mechanism will be hereinafter described in detail.
The feed mechanism used in connection with the structures 1 and 2 comprises a central shaft 48 having one end threaded in the recess of the nut 43 in alignment with the shaft 37 in the casing 2. A collar 49 surrounds the lower portion of the shaft 48 and is secured thereto by means of the'set screw which has projecting from the peripheri'al face thereof, a pin 51.
Surrounding the shaft/l8 is an elongated sleeve 52, threaded'throughout its length and terminatingat the lower end in the surrounding relatively broad flange 53,a portion of which is flattened as at 54, and has projecting therefrom the stud upon which is mounted a spur gear 56'. The flange 53 of the sleeve 52 is of greaterdianieter than thecolla'r 49 as shown in Figures 6 and 7 and the spur 56 is designed to engage the pin 51 or rather the pin 51 engagesbetween the teeth of the spur gear 56 whenthesleeve and the flange portion integral therewith is revolved;
