IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC ROOFS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,359, dated June 6, 1876; application led AFebruary 21, i876.

'To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, FRANCIS G. OoNKLIN, of Monroe, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Ilnproved Tin Rooi', of which the following is a specification My invention consists of acontrivanee for the covering of old leaky shingle roofs with tin, in such manner that the tin can be applied in a simple and cheap way, and at the same time be permanently attached Without any joints exposed to become leaky.

Figure l isa transverse sectional elevation of a roof covered with tin according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section' of a portion ofthe root', and Fig. 3 is a detail, in longitudinal section, showing the manner of fixing the tin at the end of the roof.

First, I make strips A, extending from the 'peak to the eaves, with a flange, B7 at the top,

and side ianges G. These, being placed in position, are secured at one side by the strips D, nailed on at the butt of each row of shingles,

. and hooked over the flange at the top, as

shown at F. Then the ilange O of the next strip is placed alongside of the strips D, and the edges of both flanges turned over, as at E', making substantial Aconnection to the roof at the junction of the strips. At the peak the anges B of the strips of both sides meet and turn at F, making a tight joint. At

the ends of the roof I out away a narrow margin of the shingles from eaves to peak, and tit in a strip, Gr, otl wood, over which I bend the outer edge H of the end strip A, and nail itfast to the edge of the wood strip, making a tight joint. .Along the eaves I cut olithe butts ot' the lower range ot' shingles, and fit in a wood strip, J, for the support ot' the lower ends of the strips A, and the upper edgeot' the eaves-trough I, and connect the latter with the roofstrips A by the seam K, making a substantial and tight joint thereat.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination, with a shingle roof, of strips A, extending from peak to eaves, having top flanges B, turned at F, and provided With side flanges C, the strips D, nailed at the butt of each row of shingles and hooked over ange at E, and the wood strip G, arranged alcng the margin and edge ofstrips A, all constructed and arranged to form a secure covering for an old shingle root'.

2. The Wood strip J, arranged along the eaves ot' roof, and connecting the trough I with strips A by the seam K, as shown, and for the purpose specitied.
