FOR DISINTEGRATING MACHINES Filed Feb. 23', 1928 Patented Nov. 25, 1930' i .a grindingmachine with the serted therein, y Fig. 21s a transverse section of the cyhn' UNITED STATES PATENT'QFFICEL Anne ANDREAS, or MuNsErEn, GERMA Y SCREEN MIM AC INES Application filed February 2a, 1928, Serial no. 256,237, and in Gel'manynpril 1.19271" My invention relates to screens for disintegrating machines, for instance rotary tube, cylinder and ball mills and the like. It is an object of my invention to improve a screen.
6 of this kind. 7 i i To this end, instead 'of the usual screens which are cast from high class steel, I prov vi'de screens composed of bars in the manner of a gridor grate. I 10 The output of a disintegrating machine is largely a function ofthe total area available for the flow of the material from one compartment of the machine to the other. Conse-; quently, for a given area of each opening in the screen and under otherwise equal con- .ditions that screen will yield the most favorable output in which'the number of openings is the maximum. However this condition i cannot be fulfilled with the present type of screen whichis made of high-class cast steel.
e For with this material it is impracticableto cast small and long openingsin as close vicin- ,ity as required.
By composing the screen of a plurality of f bars in the manner ofa grid or grate it is possible to provide any number of openings of any desired size without encountering any.
difiiculties in the manufacture thereof.
and forming part thereof a screen embodying my invention isillust'rated diagrammatically by way of example.
In the drawing y Fig. '1 is an axial section of the cylinder; of
new screen 1nder viewedinthe direction of the arrow in Q a Fig. 1, whichalso indicates the direction of, 40 fiowofthematerial, v I
, Fig. 3 is a cross-section of several bars, drawn to alargerscale, and i V a Fig. 4 is an. elevation'showing the outer i ends of the bars, also on a larger scale.
Referring to the drawing, aand b are compa'rtm'ents of the cylinder which are separated by a screen according to my invention. The screen is composed of a number of independent bars d which, asshown in Figs. 2 and4, are sector-shaped and partly recessed section engaging the ends. ofvthe bars cl,the
cast screen to provide the required number along their adjacent'edges to form. openings orslotse. J 7 g is a holder of any suitable design, which is here shown as a pair of rings of angleinner: ends of Whichare inserted in aboss f. Preferably, as shown inFig. 3, one edgeof 'BlChbElI. is beveled at the slots 6 so as to ob- 'tain'flaring slots. The beveled edgesareinclined in the direction in whichythe cylinder isintended to rotate as shown by the large arrow in Fig. 3, andthe slots are extended in the direction in which the material is intended to flow, as indicated by thesmall arrows in Fig. 3.. Ribs i may be formed on the bars intermediate the holder g and the boss f in order to reinforce the bars.
As a rule no machining of the bars is required, only the last bar which isinserted may require "machining in order to obtain a proper fit of the bars. a y a According to this invention the total free area of thescreen is considerably larger than in a cast-steel screen, and the proper distated. Obviously the output of the machine isincreased with an increase of the total area available for the flow of the material and. by In the drawing mixed to this specification' suitable arrangement of the openings constituting the area, or, conversely for a given output of the machinethe area of each opening may be reducedin the screen according to efficiency of, thegrinding operationris con- ,s'iderablyincreasedby formingthe bars with.
sharp edges at the slots and arrangingthe slots in a favorable.mannenboth expedients i being impracticable for obvious reasons in cast. screens.
. In, particular it is neither possible. in
of openings nor-to arrange them in suitable} opening. Consequently this invention brings 6 positions with respect to each other, nor to 1 provide the most favorable areafor each I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described for obvious modification will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim 1. Separator comprising a cylindrical outer shell, a boss fixed in the center of said shell, a pair of rings fixed to said shell in spaced relation and a plurality of individual bars radially juxtaposed in spaced relation with their outer ends loosely inserted between said rings, the inner ends resting loosely on said boss.
2. Separator comprising a cylindrical outer shell, a boss fixed in the center of said shell, a pair of rings fixed to said shell in spaced relation and a plurality of individual bars radially juxtaposed in spaced relation with their outer ends loosely inserted between said rings, the inner ends resting loosely on said boss, one edge of each bar being beveled and inclined in the direction of rotation of said shell.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
ARNO ANDREAS.
