When the assembly is rotated, the rollers swing outwardly by centrifugal force against the fixed bull-ring 9, the pulverizing rollers 10 rolling along the inner surface of this bull-ring to pulverize the material which is introduced by any suitable feeding means such as indicated at 11, mounted in the enclosing mill housing 12. A rotating skirt or shield 13 is suspended from spider 7 between the rollers and the pedestal 2 and a plurality of plows 14 carried by this skirt help to feed the material between the rollers 10 and bull-ring 9 so that it may be pulverized. The pulverized material is drawn off in suspension in air through the outlet pipe 15 connected with the top of casing 12, any suitable form of suction fan or other means being utilized to withdraw the air and suspended pulverized material. Y
The spider 7 is formed with a. plurality of outwardly projecting yokes 16, each of which comprises a pair of parallel arms 17 and 18 in which are pivotally mounted the ends of the trunnion sha t 19. The rocker 2O comprises two split collars positioned at right angles to one another, the collar 21 being clamped about the trunnion shaft 19 by means of bolts 22 and the collar 23 being clamped about the upper portion of the roller supporting assembly by means of bolts 24. At 25 is indicated generally the housing supported from collar 20, in which the shaft and bearings for rotatably supporting the roller 10 are mounted. This housing also usually contains a lubricating system for supplying` lubricant to the shaft bearings. The specific manner in which the roller is journaled, and the specific self-contained lubricating system used form no part of this invention. The present invention relates to a means for continuously supplying oil or other lubricant from a stationary reservoir located outside themill to the individual lubricating systems contained in the housings 25 of the several revolving roller assemblies. By means of this central lubricating system, lubricant is continuously and automatically distributed to the several roller units while the mill is in operation, so that the supply of lubricant in each roller assembly will be auto- Y matically replenished as it is used.
An oil tank or reservoir 26 is positioned on any suitable stationary support 27 located outside of and above the mill housing. An outlet pipe or conduit 28 provided with a cut-olf valve 29 leads from the lower portion of tank 26. At 30 is indicated the filling opening provided with a suitable closure, and 31 indicates an air vent for admitting air to the tank as the lubricant flows out. A suitable form of air vent is indicated in F ig. 5,
Lvsasev consisting of an inverted pipe loop 31, one end of which is connected with tank 26 and the other end connected with a housing 32 containing a quantity of metallic packing 33 soaked in oil. An inlet opening 34 permits the entry of air which is strained or cleaned by its passage through the material 33 before being drawn through pipe 31 into the tank 26. This device serves to keep the lubricating system clean by straining out the coal-dust or other impurities from the air that enters .the system. At 35 is shown an oil gauge for indicating the amount of lubricant in tank 26.
The outlet pipe or conduit 28 extends downwardly at 36 and is provided with an adjustable needle valve 37 and a sight feed device 38. At the lower end of vertical pipe 36, a horizontal extension 39 projects through the wall 12 of the mill housing into the mill chamber. An air vent 40, similar in all respects to the device 31 previously described and shown in detail in Fig. 5, is connected in the oil feed conduit outside of the mill at the juncture of the vertical pipe 36 and horizontal pipe 39.
On'the upper end V4l of the central vertical driven shaft 3 of the mill is positioned the distributing head indicated generally at 42. This head comprises a. lower cup-shaped portion 43 adapted to fit over the upper end 41 of shaft 3 and be secured thereto by means of a plurality of screw bolts 44 or any other suitable fastening means. The upper portion of head 42 houses a closed cylindrical chamber 45, which is closed at the bottom by horizontal wall or partition 46 and at the top by the upper horizontal wall or roof 47 of the head. In the lower portion of chamber 45, a plural ity of vertical partitions 48 project radially from the central aXis of rotation 49 of the head 42 and shaft 3, so as to form a plurality of oildistributing chambers 50 which are positioned symmetrically about the axis of rotation 49. One of these distributing chambers 50 is provided for each of the roller assemblies 8. An outlet or distributing pipe 51 leads from the lower portion of each chamber 50, and is connected by a. section of flexible piping 52 with the inlet pipe 53 leading to the self-contained lubricating system of one of the roller assemblies 8.
An extra distributing chamber 54 may be provided in head 42 for delivering oil to the bearings of vertical shaft 3. A drain passage 55 in the bottom 46 of the distributor head aligns with a passage 56 formed in the upper end portion 41 of the shaft 3, this passage 56 leading to the bearings 57 in pedestal 2. The chamber 54 will ordinarily be considerably smaller than one ofthe distributing chambers 50, the relative'sizes of these chambers depending upon the relative amount of oil needed by thebearings 57 of the central shaft 3 about its central vertical axis, said head comprising an enclosed chamber divided in its lower portion by a plurality ot radial partitions into a plurality oi distributing chambers arranged symmetrically about the axis of rotation, conduit leading from cach distributing chamber, a relatively stationary reservoir ior lubricant, a `conduit leading from the reservoir and projecting into the distributing head along the axis of rotation oi' the head, this conduit having a lateral extension at its lower end for discharging lubricant successively into the rotating distributing chambers, a stuffing box in the top of the distributing head through which the stationary conduit projects, an air vent in said stationary conduit between the reservoir and the head for admitting air to the conduit and an air-cleaner in this vent.
4C. In an oiling system for pulverizing mills, a distributing head adapted to rotate about its central vertical axis, said head comprising a hollow cylindrical member closed at its upper end and open at its lower end to be fitted over and secured to the upper end of a rotating vertical shaft, a` central horizontal partition forming a closed chamber in the upper portion of the head, a plurality of vertical partitions extending radially from the axis of rotation in the lower portion ci the closed chamber to form a plurality of distributing chambers, an outletI conduit leading from each distributingchamber, a relatively stationary reservoir for lubricant, a n-on-rotary conduit leading from the reservoir and having a portion extending` downwardly in line with the axis of rotation of the head and projecting into the closed chamber through an opening in the top of the head, and having a discharge nozzle offset laterally trom the axis of rotation, and means for sealing the joint between the rotary head and the nonrotary conduit projecting thereinto.
5. In combination with a stationary lubricant reservoir, means for distributing lubricant from the reservoir to the bearings of a plurality of rotating members having a planetary movement about a central axis comprising'a distributing head formed with a plurality of separate chambers positioned symmetrically about the central axis and rotating with the members, a conduit leading from each chamber to the bearings of one of the members, and a stationary conduit leading from the reservoir and having a discharge nozzle positioned at one side of the central axis above the distributing head so that the lubricant will be fed to the chambers in sequence asthey rotate beneath the nozzle.
6. In combination with a stationary lubricant reservoir, means for distributing lubricant from the reservoir to the bearings of a plurality of rotating members having a. planetary movement about a central axis comprising a distributing head mounted so that its central axis of rotation coincides with the central axis of the rotating assembly, the head embodying an enclosed chamber divided at its lower part into a plurality of distributing chambers, one for each member, arranged symmetrically about the axis of rotation, a conduit leading from each distributing chamber to the bearings of one of the members, a stationary conduit leading from the reservoir and having a portion projecting through the top of the distributing head into the chamber along the axis of rotation, means for sealing the joint between the rotating head and stationary conduit, the stationary conduit having a laterally proj ecting discharge nozzle at its lower end adapted to successively feed lubricant into the distributing chambers.
7. In combination with a stationary lubricant reservoir, means for distributing lubricant from the reservoir to the bearings of a plurality of rotating members having a planetary movement about a central axis comprising a distributing head mounted so that its central axis of rotation coincides with the vcentral axis of the rotating assembly, the head embodying an enclosed chamber divided vstationary conduit leading from the reservoir and having a portion projecting through the vtop of the distributing head into the chamber along the axis of rotation, means for sealing the joint between the rotating head and stationary conduit, the stationary conduit having a laterally projecting discharge nozzle at its lower end adapted to successively feed lubricant into the distributing chambers, and a control valve in the stationary conduit.
8. An oiling apparatus for a pulverizing mill, which includes a central drive shaft, bearings for supporting and centering the shaft, a spider carried by the shaft, a fixed bullring centered about the shaft, a plurality of pulverizing rollers suspended from the spider and adapted to swing out by centrifugal force against the bullring, and a plurality of bearings for rotatably supporting each roller from the spider, said oiling apparatus comprising a stationary reservoir for a supply of lubricant, a. distributing head mounted coaxially on the drive-shaft and rotating therewith, the head being formed with a plurality of separate chambers, one for each roller, arranged symmetrically about the axis of rotation, a. conduit leading from each chamber to the bearings of one of the rollers, and a stationary conduit leading from the reservoir and having a discharge nozzle positioned above the chambers at one side of the axis of rotation of the head.

An oiling apparatus for a pulverizing mill which includes a mill housing having an outlet through which pulverized material is withdrawn by suction, a central drive shaft, bearings for supporting and centering the shaft, a bullring centered about the shaft, a spider on the shaft, a plurality of pulverizing rollers suspended from the spider and adapted to swing out by centrifugal force against the bullring, and a plurality of bear-v ings for rotatably supporting each roller from the spider, said oiling apparatus comprising a reservoir'for a supply of lubricant positioned outside of the mill housing, a distributing head mounted coaxially on the drive-shaft so as to rotate therewith, the head enclosing a chamber divided in its lower part into a plurality of distributing` chambers, arranged symmetrically about the axis of rotation, a conduit leading from one of these chambers to the bearings of the shaft, separate conduits leading from each of the other distributing chambers to the bearings of the several rollers, a stationary conduit leading from the reservoir into the mill chamber and extending along the axis of rotation into the distributing head, a stuffing box in the top of the head through which the conduit projects, this conduit having a discharge nozzle at its lower end projecting laterally so as to successively feed lubricant into the several distributing chambers, an air vent in the stationary conduit outside of the mill housing, and an air-strainer in the vent.
