This 'invention relates to fasteners for trimming material and more particularly to means for simplifying, lrendering more eiii-V cient and improving generally devices of 4this character.. l
The invention, while capable of'many and diversified uses, finds particular utility in connection with applyintrimming material.
panels'to the doors and odies of motor velo .-hicles or the like.
While many forms of fastening means for trimming materials have heretofore vbeen used one method which hasbeenquite universally practiced is that'of screwing or' tacking the panels to the frame of the door of vehicles or other supports. Such methods ofy attachment necessitate the employment of braid or binding to conceal the heads of the fastening elements and. thus involve considao Erable exp/11S@` and trouble.
One of the primary objectsl of this invention is to simplify the means for attaching the trimming material panels and to provide a construction wherein the fastening means is concealed from view after the anels have been secured in place. To this en the inven- 1 tion contemplates the provision of fastening or clincher strips provided with projections or. prongs and the invention proposes the mounting of these strips-by any means such) as screws, rivets, snap fasteners, slots or slides, or spot-welding or the like directly to the 'part of the vehicle body requiringpanels or trimming. The. trimming material panels include backings formed. of rag board cardboard, composition board or the like with-.the
trimming material covering one face thereof and folded around the edges andsecu'red to the rear face of the panel by means of cement,- paste or the like. With the-fastening strips in place, the panels are secured in position by forcing the same against the prongs of the fastening strips whereupon the prongs pierce the folded edges of the trimming material and upon contact with lthe panel are deformed or deflected to thus bend or clinch the same. As a consequence, the trimming panels are held in place and` the/fasteningl means rendered invisible. 1 l
The several advantages of the lnventlon aS well-.as thenovel details of this construction. will be made more, apparent as this descrip' y when, considered in tion proceeds, especial connection with the 'accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view partly in section showing my improved fastening and a trimming panel secured thelby. ,c l
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional `view taken substantially on the plane 'indicated by line 2 2 in Figure 1. f
Figure 3 is a sectional /view taken substantially on. the plane indicated by line 3 -3 in Figure l, and
`HFigure 4 is a perspective view ofone of the fasteningstrlps.,
While it will be apparent, as this descr-ip tion proceeds, that lthe present invention is v'capable of numerous and, diversified uses, nevertheless, for the purpose of illustration I To this support I secure, as for instance, by
means of screws 1 1, a fastening strip 12 provided with projections -or prongs 13 preferably cut from the material of they body of the strip. These prongs are usually arranged in pairs and are curved or inclined with'reference to the face of the strip of the material which they project.
backings 14 formed of ragboard, cardboard composition board or the like, one face of which is covered with the trimming material i 15 which is folded or drawn over the edges of the backing to, provide an edge or-.border portion 16 which is secured yto the back face of the backing'14 by means of cement, paste or the'like. f
In mounting the panels of trimmmg'maeoy terial in position each panel is held in engageagainst the-same by blows from,'for instance,
ment with the fastening strips 12 and forced rubber or wooden mallets whereupon ythey prongs or `projections 13 arecaused tol pierce 75.- the frame ofthe ss The'panels of trimming material comprise the edge portion of the trimming material and to be forced therethrough. However, when these prongs contact with the backing 14 they are deformed or deflected and bent or clinched as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 to thus securely hold the panels in place. The deflecting of the/prongs into clinched position is facilitated by the curvature or incline of the prongs and obviously after being clinched the ends of the prongs lie between the folded edge 16 of the trimming material andthe adjacent face of the backing 14. Thus they are not visible and as a consequence a neat and permanent mounting for the trimming material panels is produced.
It is obviousthat should it at any time become necessary to remove the trimming material panels this may be done by insert- Aing a blunt tool like a screw-driver between the panel and the fastening strip whereupon the prong-s may be pried loose without injury to the panel or trimming. y
Among the outstanding advantages attributed to the present invention is the absence of any visible fastening means, the simplicity of the fastener which makes its manufacture economically efficient and lastly, the ease and facility with which the panels may be bot h attached and detached. Obvious modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in this art and as a consequence reservation is made to make such changes in many of the essential and all of.
the non-essential details as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a fastener for trimming material, a support, a member provided with prongs, secured to said support and a trimming material panel provided with a backing with the trimming material extending around ,the back thereof opposite the prongs, sfaid prongs arranged to be forced through said trimmed material and into engagement with said backing for clamping the trimming material and holding the same upon said backing.
2. In a fastener for trimming material, a trimming material panel including a backing with the edge of the trimming material extending around and. secured to the rear of said backing and a member provided with prongs, secured to a support. said prongs being adapted to be forced through said edge of the trimming material and clinched by contact with said backing. v
3. In combination, a support, a trimming material panel including a backing member arranged adjacent to the support with the edges of the ,trimming material `folded over the edges ofthe backing member and secured to the rear face thereof, securing means 'including prongs carried by the support and adapted to be forced through the trimming material and clinched by contact with said backing.
' 4. In combination, a support, a trimming material panel including a backing member adjacent to the support with the edges of the trimming material folded over the edges of the backing member and secured to the rear face thereof, securing means carried by the support adjacent the folded portion of the trimming material, said means including inclined prongs adapted to be driven through said material and bent to clinch the.
same by contact with said backing.
5. The combination with a trimming material panel including a backing member having the edges of the trimming material folded over the edges of the backing member and secured to the rear face thereof, of securing means supported adjacent the folded edge of the trimming material, said securing means including pairs of oppositely inclined prongs adapted to pierce the material andbe bent into clinching position by contact with said backing.
6. The combination with a trimming material panel including a backing with trimming material covering one face and secured to the edges of the other face, of securing means supported opposite the last mentioned face, said securing means including a fastener strip provided with deformable projections adapted to be forced through the trimming material and deformed by contact with j said backing to clinch the same.
7. In a fastener of the class described, a trimming panel comprising a backing and trimming material covering the same and a fastener supported adjacent to the backing and provided with means adapted to pass through and clinch the trimming material upon the forceful engagement of the panel and fastener.
l 8. In a fastener for trimming material, a panel including a backing member and trimming material covering one face thereof with the edges drawn over the edges of the backing member and secured to the back face thereof, a fastener strip arranged adjacent.
the last mentioned farce and provided with curved prongs projecting from one face thereof and means for securing said fastener strip to a support, said pron s arranged to be forced through the edges of the trimming material and bent by contact with said backing member to clinch the same against 'said trimming material.
9. In' combination, a support, a backing member adjacent to said support, a trimming material panel having portions folded over the edges of the backing member and securing means including prongs carried by the support and adapted to be forced through the trimming material and clinched by contact with said backing.
10. In a fastener for trimming material, a support, a trimming material panel, a backing located in advance of a portion of the :ipx-'ixr'xni'llgmterialfnd securing member" uponv tho support having prongs adapted to j be forced through said portion of the ,trim-l ming material and to be clinchd by Contact with'snid backing.
