Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. LINSOOTT, OF JEFFERSON, ILLINOIS.
IM PROVEMENT IN HAT AND COAT RACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,247, dated J une 6, 1876'; application filed April 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLESF. LINSOOTT, of J efl'erson', in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Coat Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,which will enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawin g,formin g part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a hat and coat rack embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of one of the brackets detached.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention relates to that class of racks consisting of a series of brackets attached to thewall of a building, for the purpose of providing a convenient device on which to hang hats and coats and consists in the arrangement of the brackets in combination with a supporting-cleat, whereby the same are secured to the wall, as is hereinafter more fullydescribed.
In the drawing, Arepresents the cleat, consisting of a narrow strip of wood or metal, of
the proper size to insure the requisite strength, and is ornamented on its front side by forming a molding thereon, as may be desired. The cleat is rabbeted on its rear side, at the upper edge thereof, forming a groove or channel, a, extending its entire length, and is also provided on its front side with a longitudinal groove or channel, 0, formed therein, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.. G G are metal brackets provided with arms at d, extending outward from the body 0 in the usual manner. The body of each of said brackets is provided with a depending flange, f, adapted to take into'the rabbeted channel a in the cleat, and with a horizontal flan ge,f adapted to fit in the groove 6, as shown in-Fig. 2, by which means the bracket is permanently secured to the cleat, and in such a manner as to allow it to be moved on the cleat to any desired point. The brackets O are provided each with an upwardprojecting flange,- H, through which is formed an aperture, g, of proper size to admit of passing a nail or screw through it, the object being to provide a means of securing the bracket, and consequently the cleat, to the studding in the wall. The brackets being movable on the cleat admits of their being adjusted so as to bring them in line with the studding.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I 1. The bracket 0, provided with the flanges f and f, adapted to enter the grooves a and 6, respectively, in the cleat A, substantially as and'for the purpose specified.
2. The bracket 0, provided with flangesf and f and upward-projecting flange H, provided with the aperture 9, substantially as and for the purpose specified;
