Description

J. BUTMAN.
PUMP.
Patented June 6,1876
N.PETERS, PHoTc-LUNOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON, n c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BUTMAN, OF MILAN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,230, dated J 11116 6, 1876; application filed March 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BUTMAN, of Milan, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation or side view of my improved pump and fire-engine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the pump and fire-engine.
My invention consists of a novel arrangement and combination of devices with an airchamber and pump-stock provided with spout and stop-cock. I
The main stock A of a common pump is provided with a spout and plug, G, and also a spout and stop-cock, N, Fig. 1, (shown in dotted line,) and the top is crowned by an air-chamber, H, having a tube, I, extending near the bottom ofthe air-chamber, and a check-valve, K, Fig. 2. The piston 0 works in the cylinder B, which extends into a Well, or is connected with a Watcrsupply, and is provided with valves E and F, so as to act A on the principle of a force-pump to drive the water up the stock A to the spout G or the tube I, as desired, thus making a pump and fire-engine combined.
The operation of my pump and fire-engine is as follows: When I desire to pump water in the usual way the stop-cock is left open as a vent to admit the air, and the plug is removed from the spout G to let the water flow out.
In order to change the pump into a fire-engine the spout G and stop-cock N are both closed, when the water rises into the airchamber H, and is forced through the tube I, which may be provided with a rubber hose, L, for conducting the water to a burning building, in the usual manner. A basket, M, is placed above the air-chamber to receive the hose L, when coiled up and left ready for use in any emergency, as the breaking out of-a fire. Thus, by the simple addition of the air-chamber H, tube I, vent N, and plug G, with hose L and basket M, we have an efficient fire-engine wherever the common pump is now in use throughout the country.
Having thus described my invention in pumps and fire-engines combined, I claim 1. The combination of the air-chamber H, having tube 1 and valve K, with the pumpstock A, provided with spout G and stopcock or vent N, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the air-chamber H and pump-stock A, the basket M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BUTMAN. Witnesses:
G. G. BUTMAN, IDA BROWN.
