When the motor 22 is not energized its armature and pulley 23 are free to turn in a reverse direction and consequently the cable 15 and its driving connections are free to be moved. It will'be' seen that it the carrieris clamped to the cable when said carrier is movedv downwardly the cable will be moved by the carrier and, therefore, when the motor 22 'isenergized and, placed in operation. the
cable will be caused to travel upwardly, thereby elevating the carrier.
For controlling the clamping, a bell crank lever 29 is fastened on the trunn1on'30 of an .eccentric31 journaled in the housing'13, as
is shown in Figs; 5, 6 and 7. The eccentric contacts with the follower 16 and when the lever 29 is swung in a clockwise direction,
(Fig. 5) the eccentric will be rotated so as to force the follower block into engagement with the cable 15 and thereby clamp the same. When the lever is swung in a counter-clockwise direction (Fig.5), the eccentric will be rotated away from the block, whereby the cable will be freed.

The outer end of the arm is pivoted to the upper end of a rod 48.
Normally the shoe occupies the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 9 and when in such position the shoe will pass the roller 38 without engaging the latter. When the rod 48 is pulled downward the arm 47 will be swung downward, which will cause the lever. 44 to swing, through the agency of the pitman 4 to a horizontal'position whereby the shoe 42 will be swung upwardly and outwardly, as is shown in full lines in Fig. 2
and in dotted lines in Fig. 9. For operating the rod 48' to swing the'shoe a bell crank lever 49 is pivoted to the under side of the floor of the elevator car and said lever is connected by a link 50 with a bell crank lever 51 to which'the stem of a foot treadle 52 is pivoted. The stem of the treadle extends throughthe floor of the car andsaid treadle is supported by a coil spring 53.
In operating the apparatus the parts are normally in the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the doors 25 at each floor landing are closed and the carrier 12 is locked in its elevated position by the bolt 32 which is en gaged in the aperture 33. he motor 22 is idle and the shoe 42 is lowered out of the path of the roller 38 at each floor. With the parts thus arranged the elevator car may crank lever 51 is swung and through the agency of the link 50 swings the lever 49 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2. This operation pulls the rod 48 downward,*whereby1the shoe 4:2 is projected into the pathof'the roller 38, as is shown in Fig.2.. In an elevator door operating apparatus, the combination with'a horizontally slidable elevator door, of elements for sliding said door horizontally connected thereto, a vertically slidable automatic door opening member to which said door sliding elements are connected, means directly engaged with said vertically slidable member for locking it against movement, whereby said door is closed, means carried by the car for releasing said door operating member to permit it to slide downward to actuate the door sliding elements to opensaid door, and means for engaging said member and elevating it to close said door.
