Description

C. W. TWIGG.
EARTH-AUGER. N 178.201 Patented May 30,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. TWIGG, OF NORTH UNION, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-AUGERS.
Specifieationfonning part of Letters Patent No. 178,207, dated May 30, 1876; application filed April 19, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES TWIGG, of North Union, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Hole Angers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to whichitappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ment are hereinafter set forth, and shown in' the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l-represents a perspective of a posthole auger embracing my invention; Fig.2, a top view, the shaft, being cut on. above the bits; Fig. 3, a similar view, showing the bits adjusted to cutaholeof greater diameter; Fig. 4, a bottom view, and Fig. 5 a vertical section through the bits and their cross-piece or carr1er.-
Referring to these drawings, A represents the shaft of a post hole auger, and B B the disks, which have downwardly-extending and lipped cutting-bits a a, as usual.
The shaft A pierces and carries a crosspiece, 0, extending equidistant upon each side of said shaft over the disks B, and holding them in their function'and to their adjustment in the following manner: Each end of the cross-piece O has a longitudinal slot, b b, and each disk or semi-disk B has a slot, 0, equal in length or nearly so to said slots 1), and when the parts are attached the slots of the crosspiece are at right angles to the slots of the disks. The fastening of the disks and crosspiece is by square bolts dd, held by clamp,
nuts 0 and washers f, to hold the disks firmly in the desired position with reference to the cross-piece. This position is determined by the diameter of the post-hole.
In Fig. l' the bits are shown as cutting in But in order outside of the ordinary circumferential line of cutting, and hence, as each bit cuts in an opposite direction, the circumferential cuttingline is increased without increasing the surface of the disks themselves.
From this description it will be readily seen that a post-hole auger capable of cutting onesized holes hitherto, may be rendered capable of cutting difi'erent sized holes by adapting my arrangement and construction of crosspiece and slots thereto.
I claim 1. In a post-hole auger, a slot or slots in the connecting cross piece at right angles with and in combination with slotsin the disks or cutters, as and for the purpose described.
2 The combination, in a post-hole auger, of
t the cross-piece 0, having slots I) b, the cutters B, having slots 0 at right angles thereto, and the square bolts d d, said bolts clamping the cutter and cross-piece in position, as described,
to effect the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WESLEY TWIGG.
