This invention relates to an anti-glare device and has relation more particularly to a device of this kind especially designed and adapted for use in connection with the wind- 5 shield of a vehicle, and it is an objectof the I invent-ion to provide a device of this kind Which may be readily compacted when not in use and which, when extended, provides an effective means to protect the driver of the car against the glare of bright lights on an approaching car or against sunlight.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved anti-glare device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that m invention may be the better understood, will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied or working position and with the shadin members folded or compacted;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the device unapplied with the shading members extended;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view partly in the connected end portions of the shading niemibers Figure 4 a fragmentary rear elevational view of the device as herein employed;
Figure 5 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the structure illustrated in Figure 4;
' Figure 6 is a view in perspective of the supporting member or plate as herein employed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes a supporting plate or member of requisite dimensions and which has adhesively or otherwise secured to-an end portion thereof a block 2. This block 2 is also adhesively or otherwise attached to the outer face section and partly in elevation illustrating of the pane 3 of a windshield at a desired point thereon. lVhen so applied the plate 1 has depending lowerportion spaced from the pane 3 as is particularly illustrated in Figure 5 of the accompanying drawing. The lower portion of thememberl is formed with a reverted plate 4 partially overlying the lower portion of the member 1 and spaced therefrom, Freely disposed through the plates 4 and l. for ready endwise movement is a shank 5. I The outer end portion of the shank 5 carries an operating member or button 6 and interposed between said member or button 6 and the plate 4 is an expansible mem-V her 7, herein disclosed as a coil spring.
This member 7 is of requisite tension to constantly urge the shank 5 to the limit of its outward movement which is determined by an elongated rod 8 directed through the end por' tion of the shank 5 inwardly ofthe plate 4. The plate 4 forwardly of the shank 5' has pressed outwardly therefrom a stop lug 9 with which the rod 8 is adapted to engage from above to limit the downward swinging movement of said rod. When it is desired, however, to permit the rod to swing downwardly it is only necessary to impose sufiicient pressure upon the head or button 6 to force the shank 5 inwardly a distance sufficient to free the rod 8 from said lug 9 as is indicated by broken lines in Figure 5.
Freely engaged with the portion of the shank 5 between the plates 1 and 4 are the inner end portions of the shading blades or members 10 adapted to have relative swinging movement after the fashion of a fan. These blades or members 10 are of suitable translucent material serving to effectively shade the glare of the sun or the bright lights of an approaching car. The inner end portions of the blades or members 10 are provided with angular edges 11 arranged on different angles, as indicated in Figure 3, so that when the blades" or members 10 are released said blades will spread out, as illustrated in Figure 2, the limit of movement of the blades or members 10 being determined by the congreatest extent of downward movement has secured at a desired point along its lower marginal portion a plate 14 extending laterally beyond said edge and with which is pivotally connected an angular extension 15 arranged at the outer end of the rod 8.
This extension 15 underlies the lower edges of all of the blades or members 10 so that when it is desired to raise or compact the device, it is only necessary to turn the head or button 6 in the desired direction until the rod 8 is engaged over the lug 9. This lifting movement of the blades or members 10 can, if desired, also be effected by direct contact of the hand with said blades or members.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an anti-glare de- 'iceconstructed in accordance with my inven tion is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and
it will also be obvious that my invention is bers freely mounted upon said shank, stop means carried by the supporting member for limiting the swingi movement of said shadingmembers in one direction said shading members having angularly inclined inner end portions for engagement with said stop means, a rod carried by the'shank and having a portion underlying the shading members, means for operatively connecting said portion of the rod to one of the shading members, yielding means for constantly urging the shank in a direction to maintain the rod substantially in contact with the supporting member, and an outstanding lug carried by said. supporting member with which the rod engages to hold the shading members raised, inward movement of the shank releasing the arm from-the lug for permitting the shading members to drop.
