an ice pick whereinthe parts are positively held togethenand whereby such parts may be assembled at a Ininimumcost.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a means for preventing the handle from splittingfunder the repeated shocks caused by the use of the ice pick thereby pro- In. the drawing forming part of this specification wherein corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views;
Fig. 1 shows a sectional view of an embodiment ofthe invention in completed form.
Fig. 2 shows a fragmentarylsectional View withthe parts in position ready to havethe sleeve forcibly expanded about thecup.
Fig. 3 shows a fragmentary section of the completed device, showing how the interior :movementof the rod is limited by the shock difi'using stop.;
The ice pick comprising this invention includes ahandle 10 of wood or other suitable material provided with a longitudinal passage having aninterior portion 11 of smaller split.
diameterand an exterior portion 12 of larger diameter with a shoulder 13 formed therebetween. A pointedrod 14: is yieldably retained in this passage and is adapted for longitudinal movement therein, its movement into the passage being limited by a ball 15 placed at the interior end otpassage 11, so that in use the ball receives the shocks from the rod and diiiuses such shocks throughoutthe handle eliminating the tendency of the handle to The means for yieldably retaining rod 1 1 in handle 10 comprises a cup 16 snugly fitted in passage 12 I against the shoulder 13 as shown in Fig. 2. A tubular metallic sleeve 17 of thinner or weaker material than the cup 16 is snugly fittedint-o the passage 12 as shown in Fig. 2, having anopen end 15 of viding great durability of the completed arti- .cle. I
lesser interior diameterthan the exterior diameter of cup 16. Sleeve 17 is then forcibly pressed against cup 16, whereupon end 18 Wlll. be expandedabout cup 17 into the handle forming an anchor 19 positively retaining the sleeve within the handle as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. R
The sleeve 17 has a closed end 20 having an opening 21, and a correspondingopening 22 is formed in cup 16, these openings 21 and 22 forming a means for slidably guiding the rod 14:. Ears 23 pinched into rod 14 prevent said rod from passing through opening 21,
and a washer 24 is placed on the outer side of ears 23 to assist in such retention. Another washer 25 is placed on the inner side of cars 23 and serves as a base for one end of a compression spring 26 placed within thesleeve 17 about the. rod 14, the other end bearing against cup 16.
To add weight to the handle a heavy cap 27 vmay be attached to the end of handle 10 by a screw 28 and may be hexagonal in shape to prevent the device from rolling when placed on a table or other surface. Lugs 29 on theinside of cap 27 are pressed into the end of the handle when the cap is aiiixed thereto, and serves to prevent the turning or slipping of the cap on the handle.
To operate the device, the point of rod 14 is placed on the ice where it is desired to split it, and the handle is repeatedly pressed forcibly down against the rod, whereby to drive the point into the ice to split it.
It will be noted that this invention provides an efficient type of ice pick that may be e manufactured and assembled at a minimum expense, wherein the parts are positively held together and wherein the device will be of great durability due to the elimination of the tendency of the handle to split 1 While in use, but it will be understood that ameter at its exterior end and of lesser diame ter at itsinterior end, a shoulder formedin said handle between the small and large por- ,tions of said opening, a stop at the interior the open end of said tubular member being expanded about said cup to form an anchor locking said tubular member in said handle,
said tubular member having an opening through its capped end, a pointed rodfslidably passing through said openings in said cup and tubular member in position to have its inner movement limited against said stop a compression spring in said tubular member, one end of said spring bearing against said cup; earson saidirod forretaining a washer on each side of said ears, the other v end 01 said spring bearing against one of said washers and tending to urge said rod away from said stop.
