preferably used for the purpose of applying the house number on the vertical face of the curb at the side of the street directly in front of the house. In this manner the'identification of the house is made available from the,
street, and the number of the house may readie 1y be ascertained from the curb instead of from the house, whlch 1n many instances stands back a considerable distance from the street or pavement. Under such conditions, when the house is located back from thestreet or pavement, great difliculty is experienced in reading the house number, especially at night. 7 v
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a stenciling device which is simple in construction and which may be manufactured at comparatively low costof production; which may be manipulated with facility; and by means of which the house number or other insignia may readily be applied to a desired surface.
In carrying out my invention I utilize. a stencil frame together with interchangeable stencil plates, and means are provided for rigidly locking the stencil plates in the frame for use. The frame is provided with a handle or guide plate which is used for retaining the frame in position against the surface upon which the insignia is to be produced.
My invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed. In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I- have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1' is a perspective view of my stenciling device showing it applied for use on n are adapted to receive interchangeablestencil plates indicatedv at 10, best seen in a streetcurbing. Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the device. Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the stencil plates.
1 In order that the utility of the devicemay be understo odI have indicated in Figure 1 part of a'street curbing C having the top face T, and the'gutter-is indicated at G; It will,
be'understood that the house number 1235is to be applied to the vertical face of'thc curb C. r In applying the house number a space on the vertical face of thecurb is first painted, as for instance a black background, and then the house number is applied on the backgroundin a contrasting color. Thus the device is used in two different waysforthepurpose "of producing the house number.
Incarrying out 'my invention l pre'ferably fashion the parts from metal and I use a flat rectangular base plate 'orstencil frame 1 having'an open longitudinallyextending slot Qand along the upper and lower edges of this slot are provided exterior grooved guideways 3 and 4. A.t'the left ends of these in Figure 2 the e'dges of thestenci'l frame and the retaining plate are fitted'to-g'ether so that the two elements,"when'the" joint i's' closed, are perpendicular one to anotheri By means oft-his guide plate orretainingplateG, the
stencil frame may be'adjusted to 'd esiredposimay hold the plate 6 in the left-hand while he paints withabrush in the rightlxhand.
WVhilethe stencil and the plate 6- are disposed at right angles'in Figure 1 it willbe seenthat or horizontal 'align1nent "a's indicated? in F1gure'2,-and of coursethe parts maybe disposed'fat various angles in order to bring the stencil frame parallel with and flush-against the surface'to be painted. l I
The guideways 8 and f the stencil fra me tion and there retained. Thus theoperator "these parts are to be used while-in vertical Figure 3 theseplates are. rectangular in form and provided with out standing flanges 11.
The flanges are turned up from the right hand edges of the stencil plates and they r terminate short of the'top and bottom edges of the plate in orderfthat'the flanged plates may he slid along in the grooved guideways 3 and 4.. It willbe apparent; that, the flanges, 11 are used as handles and are graspedbetween the thumb and finger for sliding the I out of operative posi v stencil plates in and tion. v v
In Figure 1. I have shown four stencil plates and in addition I- have shown a'blank stencil platesinaybe increased or diminished and the blank plates on filler j'plates 10A, may be used where required, and :these stencil plates and blank'plates'are all intercha-ngea bleiforusea, I I
