Description

UNITEnV STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. BUQKLEY, oE KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178.109, dated May 30, 1876; application filed April 15, 1876.
To alt` whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. BUGKLEY, of the city ot' Kansas, in the county ot' Jackson, and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in. Railroad-Switches, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference 'being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a plan view ot my railwayswitch, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the rail through lw w,- and Fig.' 3, a transverse vertical section through .fr al. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the rail, and Fig. 5 is a side View of the same.
My invention consists in certain improvements .in railway-switches; and has for its object to keep `the switch-rails in place, and at all times swung against the head-chairs at the throw of the switch, and thereby prevent the lamination of the-ends Vot the rails by passing trains; and also to provide for the expansion and contraction of the rails, and
have the switch-rails move easily at all times in both cold and hot weather.
In the annexed drawings, A A represent the head-chairs, in each of which is a transverse slot, a., of suitable dimensions. Near the ends ot' the switch-rails B B, at the throw of the switch, is securely bolted a lug, O, which extends below the rail and into the slot of the chair. The slots a are curved to the radius of the switch-rails, and the lug C moves therein, thereby keeping the ends of said rails snug up against the head-chairs.
At E I show a combined carrier and {ishplate bolted to the rails, where the openings .are left, to provide for expansion and contraction; and to this end I use a spring, Gr, to keep the switch-rails snug against the headchairs, the bolt-holes in lthe carrier E being elongated to allow for said expansion and contraction. This can also be used' at any point where an open joint is desired. Where Wide-headed rails are used a portion of the head must be cut olf, to allow the carrier to catch the wheels.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Thehead-chair A, provided with the curved slot a, and having a lug, (l, bolted on the switch-rail B moving therein, for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The slotted carrier and sh-plate E, and
spring G, in combination with the rails and head-chairs, as and for the purpose set forthffM-W JAMES M. BUGKLEY.
Witnesses:
M. W. J AMIsoN, JAMES HOUSTON.
