IMPROVEMENT IN NUT-LOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,086, dated May 30, 1876; application filed Apri1 7, 1874.

To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that 1, MARK A. SPAFFORD, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Nut-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my inreference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device; and Fig. 2, a vertical central longi- Like letters of reference indicate like parts. The objector" my invention is to improvethe construction and operation of the means employed to lock nuts upon bolts; and to that end it consists in sinking a longitudinal and in providing the nut with a' soft-metal after the nut is set, substantially as hereinafter specified.

In the drawing, A represents the bolt. ais the longitudinal groove sunken into the screwthreaded part of the bolt. B is the nut. O is a comparatively thin flange or annular rim or tongue, continuous with the screw-threaded part of the nut. w

After the nut is set, that part of the flange which lies over the groove a is driven into the said groove by being struck for that purpose with a suitable instrument, it being understood that the flange is made of soft metal. By this means the nut may be firmly looked after being set.

I deem it preferable to make the part0 in the manner shown and described; but instead of beilig annular and continuous with the screw-threaded part of the nut, it may consist of a narrow tongue arranged in any suitable position on the nut, and sufficiently long to enter the groove by being bent in the manner described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A nut-lock, consisting of a bolt having a longitudinal groove sunken into its screwthreaded part, and of a nut provided with a soft-metal tongue, arranged substantially as specified, to enter the said groove by being operated upon, in the manner described.
