The lower cross head oomprises a cylinder 3 intowhichis placed aplunger 22iwhich, of i i v course, is pr'ov'ided'with theflusual hydraulic 90 pack ngs which havebeen omitted for clearn'essl This plunger" is provided with lateral projections'which pass into the corresponding' internal grooves'in the cylinder '5,'which I grooves are of such height as 'to give the plunger a certain up and down play in the with toggles 17* pivotedto the "frame of the member 15 which carries at its upper end the 1'00 III roller 16 upon which the cam can act. The interior of the cylinder communicates by the channel 24 with the steam cylinder 29 by means of pipes 24 and 25.
U-shaped latches 11 are provided and pivoted at 53 to the vertical bars 6 and by springs surrounding the pivots of said latches, the upper free end of the latchesthrown inward and into that path of the flanges 14 of the anvil 12, said flanges being provided with a bevel at the bottom corner of the outer end for a purpose that will be set forth.
The cylinder 23 has the part 2% fiexedly connected to the high pressure line 25 which conneots with the bottom of the cylinder 26 which has slidably mounted therein the piston 27.
This piston carries at its upper end the pisv ton 28 which is free to travel in the cylinder 29. In tapped holes in the top of this cylinder are moi'intedithe safety or blow off valve 30, the gauge 31 and the steam inlet pipe 32.
- The high pressure oil pipe 25 is tapped be tween the oil cylinder 23 and the steam cylinder 26 at the point 33. The branch pipe 34 on which is mounted the pressure reduction valve 35 and the re'ducin valves or cock 36.
has tapped into it" The header or manifold 3T the branch lines 38 which are providedwith i at ' of cam 13 as shown in'Fig. .1.
the additionalcontrolling cocks 39. Where necessary the. flexible connections 40 are provided to allow for thetravel of the parts.
The header is joined to individual distribut ing pipes 10 as shown and which are connected to shafts or pins 17' of the toggle joints v and by l0 to direct lubricant on the surface v The shafts and bearings being drilledand grooved in a suitable manner to allow a proper distribution of thelubricant. The shafts or pins move in their respective bearings and the lubricant is fedto the bearings so as to lubricateand reduce the friction between the shaft or pins and its bearing.
The operation'is as follows: I
The empty box 19 is passed'under the hop per 47 and the plasti'cor semi-plastic material such as asphalt filled' into said box which is then removed from under the outletchute of the hopper 47 beneath the compressorhead 18 of the upper cross head 4. The anvil now rests upon the upper end of the standards and 46, the upper endof the anvil closing and fitting into the lower end of the mold 4:8. The
cam 13 through the togglellevers forces down piston 22, the lower cross head 5 and also the upper cross head 1, causing the compressor head 18 at the same to force the charge of asphaltfromthe box19 into themold48 and upon the upper end of the anvil 12. Then: both the cross pieces are raised underthe-aotion of the cams 10. Vith the parts in the position as shown in Figure 3 the block has just been molded and is within themold above the top of the anvil 12. By the action of the box actuating mechanism box 19 is now rapidly withdrawn and brought beneath the chute of the hopper 47 and filled with fresh material and the cam 13 now forces up the anvil which pushes the completed block up to the level of the top of the mold, as is shown in Figure 1.
As the anvil rises, the latches 11 are first pressed outward and then snap inward and engage the bevels in flanges 14 of the anvil, and thus hold the anvil in raised position, it being, of course, understood that during this time the bars 6 and their top and bottom cross heads arein extreme raised position. By the action of the mechanism not shown, the now filled box 19 is brought into the positions shown in Figure 3 and pushes the completed block to the'left on the top of the mold and the completed block is removed. The cam 13 now acts on the bottom roller-16 and forces the same down whereby the bars 6 and top and bottom cross headsare forced down, the
ca ms 10 being so shaped as to 'permit of this.
The compressor head 13011 the top cross head now forces the material in the box through the box 19 and into the mold and upon the upper endof the anvil whichis still raised. As the compressor head'18 descends, the-latches 11 and blocks 8 descend with it, and come in contact with the outer sides of the standards 45 and 46,are pressed sidewise thus releasing the anvil just before it comes to'a position of rest with its flanges 14 on the standards 45 f and 46, and the intervening charge of asphalt is now compressed in the mold between the top of the'anvil 1 2 and the bottom of the:c0mpressor head'18, and now the cams 1O begin to act and-lift up the bars 7 6 and the top and bottom cross heads and bring them into position shown in Figure 3 and soon.
The steam is admitted to the cylinder 29 at a predetermined pres-sure which is indicated on the gauge 31, and'if the blow off valve 30 is then set to operate at a pressure slightly above thatindicated on the gauge 31, it willbe readily understood that as'the toggles apply a downward pressure to the top 1 of the piston 22 that is greater than the up-' ward pressure of the oil on the piston, the
pressure in the steam cylinder 29' jumps upward in pressure and the poppet valve 30 portionately increased in pressu're and then returned to normali If, however, the poppet valve isset at a pressure somewhat above the gauge pressure, i. e. atthe maximum allowable pressure for the press, the downward pressure ofthe, oil pistonwil'l be transmitted tothe'steam but the steam valve will not go off unless the safepressure is'exerted. Thus mamas as the pressure in the oil cylinder mounts the pressure in the steam cylinder mounts proportionately due to the compression of the steam and as the oil piston releases the pressure, the steam pressure returns to normal. The poppet valve Will not go off unless due to some obstruction or a super-normal charge, etc. the press develops as dangerous pressure at which time the poppet valve will go off torelease that pressure.
There is a quantity of oil at high pressure in the line 25. This pressure can be propor-. tionately reduced at the valve 35, and the quantity controlled collectively by the cock 36on thermain line and individually by the cocks 39 on the branch'lines. The flow of oil under a predetermined pressure, i. e. that controlled by steam pressure, and in apredetermined quantity is being fed to the surface of camtl, the bearings in which shaftor roller 16,,shaft's 17 of toggle 17 during the V greatestpart. of the machine cycle but at the time when the machine has reached its maxi- I lubricated parts varies in combination, a movable member, a second; member adapted to engage said movable; member in frictional relationship along a surface of frictional contact, means for relathe feed lines 38. Also'the pressure maybe causes a consequent. upward travel of the V said rotatin steam cylinden This compresses the steam up to: a predetermined point beyond which the steam valve opens. This fixes the upper possible limit of developed pressure; The variation of oil pressure and consequently the pressure and volume of oil passing to the by these parts; 7 r
The volume of oil in the hydraulic cylinder is sufliciently gr'eatiso that the amount of oil used in lubrication does not affect the operatlon, sincethe reduction in volume merely causes the lowest position of the steam piston to be lowered. Iti-s but necessary to pump [additional oil intermittently into'ithe system as by pump 49.
Various modifications of the above may utilized such vas the introduction of additional pressure regulating-valves on each'o'f,
