DOOR-BELL. N'o.178,056 Patented May 30,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'DFFIGE.
JAMES M. HINGHEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-BELLS.
Specification formiiig part of Letters Patent No. 178,056, dated May 30, 1876; application filed May 9, 1876.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1' represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a side View, partly in section, of my improved door hell or gong.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention refers to an improved door bell or gong that is Worked with great facility so as to furnish a reliable and loud ringing by a light or strong pull, and avoid thereby the necessity of pulling repeatedly to produce the alarm.
The invention consists of a bell mechanism operated by a swinging lever that winds up a spring and rings the bell on a release of the pull, by the action of the spring and transmitting gear-wheels.
In the drawing, A represents a gong attached by a post to a plate, B, that is secured to the wall. The gong is sounded by a clapper, A, which is set in motion by a pallet, C, operated by an escapement wheel, a loose gear-wheel, O, and a pivot-pawl, o, from a stationary cog-wheel of the winding-shaft D of the alarm mechanism. The winding-shaft .D is turned by means of a double lever, E,
that may be pulled from right or left by the wire E, connecting with the bell-pull at the door. A strong band-spring, F, is coiled The alarm will be sounded whether a light or strong pull is given at the door, as the selfsetting spring mechanism produces in all cases a clear and even ringing of the bellalarm, being more reliable and superior to the common bell devices in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A door-bell alarm, composed of a swinging lever connected to the door-pull, a windingshaft, a coiled spring, transmitting gearwheels, and a bell or gong, being so constructed that the bell is rung by the action of the spring as soon as the door-pull is released, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
