The invention relates to braiding machines of the type used in manufacturing rubber tubing such as is used for garden hose, fire engine hose, air brakev couplings and the llke. The'invention has for a primary ob1ect to provide an improved machine of this fcharac-' ter-by means of which a moreperfect and dependable product maybe produced; and by means of which the manufacture thereof may be facilitated and rendered more economical.
A further object is to provide a machine of this character with-adjustable mechanismwhereby/its operation may be automatically discontinued upon the completion of any determined length of tubing-up to the capacity of the machine and whereby thel machine inthe accompanying; drawings and herein-v after described in reference thereto the nov elty of the invention herein illustrated being set forth in the appended claims. In the may be readily adapted to the manufacture of tubing of various diameters, thicknesses and bores.
These objects are accomplished by mecha-.
nism" an embodiment of which is. illustrated drawings:

Fig. t is a plan view, and Fig.5 is an endelevation of the same.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section through the take off mechanism on line 66 Fig.7 4 showing on an enlarged scale the connection between the mandrel and draftmeans.
Fig. 7 is a section on line 77 of Fig. 3 on the same scale as Fig.6, showing the relation.
Fig. 2 is a section through the braiding matic stop mechanism on line 9- 9 of Fig. 8.
The machine herein illustratedrand de scribed has in common with machines heretofore known, a braiding unit A, amandrel B in the nature of a long rod, and take off mechanism C; the mandrel being adapted to be moved alonga course and tubingforme'd thereon by first applying a layer of unvulcanized rubber-thereto, after which a covering of several successive layers is braided there- 7 on. Upon completion of the braiding a further coating of'unvulcanized rubber is laid A uponthe braiding and the whole vulcanized before the removal of the mandrel."
, In machines such as heretofore used, difliculty has been experienced in removing the finished product from the mandrel owing, to
distortionsinjthe rubber" and its adhesion to the mandrel causedib'ythe pressure exerted her nr y he mechanism; 7
In an attempt to overcome these diflicul ties, the mandrel has; been drawn along its course bya cable attached to its forwarden'd. This: method has ,resulted in .an uneven and undependable braiding due to the stretching ofthe cable with a consequent uneven feed of the mandrel usual mandrel I feeding 'Ihepresent machine overcomes the difiicul ties of both of these previously used methods vided for. The provision ofmeans adapting themachine to the facilitous manufacture. of
tubing varying in thickness and bore is pro .vided for in a carriage attachable to the'endless belt and. having means adjustable vertically thereon for attaching mandrels, of varying. diameter thereto. 7
I will" now proceed to describe the machine with the aboveand other inventive features applied thereto, beginning with the braiding unit r i by provldingga' draft means 1n theynature V g which consists of circular stationary supports for the braidlng mechanism arranged 111 spaced parallel vertical planes transversely of the unit and consisting themselves of spaced parallel walls 11 one of which is provided with the usual raceways 12 for the support and determinate guidance of yarn carriers 13 in their braiding movements. These supports .also carry between their spaced walls 11' the usual horn gear mechanism 14 for actuating the carriers which in turn are driven by the power shaft 15 extending longitudinally of the braiding unit through unit byrods 24 and at their'bottoms are sup-- secured thereto.
The usual automatic stop or: cut out mecha nism operable upon the breaking of'a thread,
gears 16 on the said shaft in mesh'with gears 17 on shafts 18 journaled in the walls 11 of the supports, the shaft 18 carrying a gear 20 meshing with one of a train of gears 21, each gear of which is connected through a sleeve 22 with a horn gear 23. For stability, the supports 10 are interconnected at the top of the ported on the base 26 by pedestals 25.
. The power shaft is itself driven from a suitable source of energy, not, shown, through a belt 27, trained about a pulley 28 fast to the shaft 15. Adjacentthis pulley on the said shaft is an idler pulley 29- on to which the belt may be shifted when the machine is to be automatically stopped; the shaft 15- may also be turned manually by hand'wheels 30 1 is provided and consists of the belt shifting arms 31 secured to a rod 32 movable length- 1 wise of the machine under, nfluence of a spring 33. Shifting of this rodis normally prevented by an arm 34Qsecured to ashaft35 journaled in bearings 36. extending length-- wise, of .the machine and resting ina-no tch in rod 32 as shown in Fig. 9. The withdrawal of the arm from the notch is-caus'ed by the 42 journaled to the, base26, said shaft having 6 a hand lever 44 at one endi and an 'arm 45 at the other end pivotally connectedto the rod as The; supports 10 are centrally ap'erturedas at v47 toaccommodate passage'of mandrel B axially therethrough the mandrel being supi ported in passing by pulleys 48 rotatable on 6 arms 49 secured to the supports.
The take off mechanism C associated with the braiding unit includes supporting struc; ture standards 50 arrangedjinpairs spaced along the course of mandrel B, the standards of each pair being in opposition on either side of the said course; said standards being secured together at their upper ends by rods 51 and their lower ends by the base member 52.
Supported by the standards is a track comprised of angle brackets 53 and channel beams 54 extending the length of the take off structure and connected together by bolts 55; Angle irons 54 ;have flanges ontheir upper edges affording a support or runway for the carriages 57 as they passalong their course carrying with them the braided mandrel; The c'arriagesi'areconnected to and drawn along by an endless chain 58 comprised" of pivotally connected nonelastic links trained about sprockets 59 secured on shafts 60' which are journaled in the supporting structure. The non-elastic qualities of the links insure an unvarying pull upon the mandrel with a consequent uniformity of its movement along its course resulting in a uniformity of the braiding. e
The chain is driven by a shaft 61 extending lengthwise ofthe machine, through a worm-62011 shaft 61 and'a .wormwhecl 63 on one 'of the shafts 60. Shaft 61in turn is driven from power shaft 15 through gear 64, on shaft 15, meshing with gear 65 and secured to'sliaft'66 journaledin a braiding unit support which latter shaft is in driving connection f'with shaft 61 through sprocket wheels 67 and 68 and sprocket chain69l" r The lower reach of the chain 58: is" passed over sprockets 70 'adjustably' mounted byv means of brackets 70? on the angle irons 54 tensioning'the said chain aboutthe sprockets 59f Secured to rods 51 at theend of the takeoff mechanism adjacent the braiding.
unit is a former ring 71 0f usual construction and purpose. I
As heretofore set forth, it is important in the production of lengths of tubing such as, herein suggested, that no. adherence of the tube to' the mandrel or other obstruction to the removal of the tube therefrom should be present when this stage of its production is reached.
In the present embodiment of the .invention these objectionable features are avoided; by threadlng the mandrel; B at one end as shown at-72 in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and- UplOYldlng 1n connectlon therewith a connectlng member 74 having a correspondinglythre'aded socket 73 the member 7 4 being rotatablymounted. in acarriage 7 5 which comprises a flat portion 7 6 adapted to rest upon 7 the endless chain 58 and a vertically extending portion 77 in a vertical slot 78 of which, the socketed connecting member 74 'rotat ably and slidablymounted.
This slot is of sufficient extent and width to accommodate connecting members of varying diameter to be used with lnandrels adapt the position of thesaid connecting member to the position of the mandrelfor varying thicknesses of tubing being fabricated thereupon. The carriage is provided with a book 79 on'its under side by 11neans of which the same maybe simply connected with the chain 58.
The connecting member T4 is vprovided with an integrally formed collar, or flange 89 at one end and a detachable collar or flange 81 at its other end, preventing disengagement thereof from the slot 78, the collar 81 being threaded to a stem 82 extending fromthe socketed member so as to provide for interchangeable use of various.:connecting members as suggested above, and is'prevented from turning movement thereon 'by a removable pin 83'. The collar81 may be provided witha turn button or hand Wheel enlargement-8 1 at one end to' facilitate' rotation of the socketed member.- i. a
Adjustment of the carriages 57: to the requirements of tubes of various diameters is provided for by supporting the: track beams 5-1 on vertically adjustable members comprising cross bars 85 secured between vertically movable members 86 guided in their vertical travel by bolts S'Zat the ends of cross heads 88" slidable in vertical parallel slots 89 formed in the standards. The travel of these members 86 is impelled by a threaded con- 7 nection'of the members 86 with rods 90.
These rods 90 are arranged in opposing pairs 3 and are conveniently driven by hand wheel shafts 91 journaled in the standards, and
rods; the shafts 91 having the usual handwheels 94: on their projecting ends. The rods 90 are supported in sockets 93 of the journal supports for the hand Wheel shafts.
In connection with this mechanism there is provided lHtllQ present machine, mechanismautomatically operable to stop the t braiding unit upon the completion of a determined length of braiding on the mandrel.
' This mechanism comprises a rod 95 extending longitudinally of the take off structure, which is supported for limited longitudinal movementin brackets 96 secured to one of the two rods 51.
A collar 97 is mounted on the rod 95 for adjustmenttherealong and is adapted to be held in adjusted positionby set screw 97 -v The collar has thereon a lug 98 extending across the path of one arm of a two arm lever 75 by a helical spring 103, the tension of which may be adjusted by bolt 104 threaded to the lug and forming the connection be tween the same and the spring V vRod, 95 has fixed thereon spaced collars 105 between which prongs 106 of the forked the tubing is braided; take arm .107 ride above and below the rod;-
track. Its; other arm is connected through 7 link 112-,"bel1 crank 113, link 114 in train with crank arm 111 secured to the end of shaft 35 and since thearm 34: isalso secured-to this tion here described willrelease rod 32.
j When the desired 'length'ot braid has been produced on; the moving mandrel-B; the lever 99, moving: with the mandrel, will strike against stop lug 98 of collar 9 7- and shift the latter, and consequentl rod 95, the distance necessary. to releaserodj32, and thus stop the machine by shifting'the belt from drivep'ulley -28g011t0. the idler pulley 29, irrespective of any-control by the braiding mechanism;
- The foregoing "description is thoughtto fully set forth the present -improvements in constructionand operation as specifically applied tothe. known type o f braiding mecha'- nism indicatedfit being readily understood from such description that the invention relates to the novel take-ofli mechanism characterized essentially by the. means rovided for automatically stopping the mechanism byaction of the moving mandrel,
