IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-DISTRIBUTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,965, dated May 30, 1876 application filed April 25, 1876.

Be it known that I,`JOHN R. SHIRLEY, of the city of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Distributers; and I here- -by declare that the following i`s a full, clear,

signed to control the use of gas in dwellinghouses, hotels, manufacturing establishments, gas-stoves, or other places where a number of' burners or a number of systems of burners are used.

In a dwelling-house the dist-ributer may be placed in any convenient partof the house, and, if desired, in a locked-up box. It will be connected by one main pipe with the gas-meter,l

and from the distributer branches will be carried to the different stories, or, if desired, to

i the different rooms.

If the gas-distributer is thus placed in the v hall or the office of the building, the gas can be readily shut of from any part of the building', and no person can use gas without the consent of the owner, nor will there be any loss from leakage in the part so shut oli'. If used on a gas-stove, or other similar device requiring more than one burner at times, the gas is connected with the distributcr, and is let onto or shut off from any one of the burners by the slide regulating the supply for that burner, all the slides' being in one convenient place, readily accessible, thus doing away with the numerous cocks now required.

In the drawings, a is the main inlet-pipe by which the gas is supplied. b is the distributing chamber, provided with a number of by screws, Vsothat the same may be readily re moved. TheA slides c care arranged and bedded between the nipple-plate and the distributing-chamber, so as to make gas-tight joints. d d' are the screw-nipples, to-Which the pipes leading to thedii'erent burners are secured. E E are two washers, made of leather, rubber, orother suitable material. These washers have holes punched, or otherwise formed, corresponding with lthe holes in the distributingchamber and nipple-plate. These washers E E form a packing, and secure a gas-tight joint, while the slides c c are allowed to slide freely in and out. The whole forms a simple, cheap, and efficient arrangement, by which gas can be-readily distributed 4to any number of burners or system of burners, and thus each may be readily controlled.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- Y 1. The combination, with the distributingchamber 11, of the nipple plate d, and 'the slides cc, arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.

' 2. In a gas distributer, the combination, with the inlet-pipe a and nipple-plate d, of the distributing-chamber b, and the slides c c, arranged to distribute and regulate the gas to any required number of burners or system of burners, substantially as. and for the purpose specified.
