Description
) I 1 "Hlmm I v -IHHHHHHHH p i6 ga I ifz \l 3 I a 4 I W I Y c Patented Oct. 14, 1930 UNITED PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH WALTER, OF CALUMET CITY, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK S. IBETZ COMPANY, OF HAMMOND, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA OBSTETRICAL TABLE Application filed. October 10, 1928. Serial No. 311,651.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of surgical operating table particularly adapted for obstetrical use; to provide an obstetrical table having improved pulling handles adapted to be grasped by the patient for assisting in the proper muscular eii'ort which is essential to a normal delivery; to provide pulling handles of this kind which are adjustable to permit them to be shifted longitudinally of the table to suit the requirements of the dilierent patients; and to provide improved means operable by the patients pulling of the handies for rigidly securing them in adjusted position.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a delivery table having two of the improved handles applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is afragmentary side elevation of the same, the dotted outline representing one of the handles in a lowered position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Inasmuch as the improved adjustable handles to which this invention is applied may be used in connection with numerous forms of beds and operating tables, certain parts of the table believed unnecessary to a complete understanding of the invention 7 have been omitted from the drawing.
In the construction shown, the invention is applied to a surgical operating tablejcomprising a top 1, tiltably supported on the usual legs 2, and provided with improved pulling handles 3.
The top 1 includes the usual bed section 4. and a hinged foot section 5. Located at respectively opposite sides of the top, isa pair of rails 6, having their ends riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the side edges of the bed section 4.
In the form shown, the improved pulling handles 3 include a pair of U-shaped clips 7 which slidably embrace the rails 6, so as to permit them to be adjusted longitudinally of the table. Mounted in the upper ends of the movement relative to the rails.
'zontal to be shifted longitudinally of clips 7, are pins 8, which pivotally support the handles 3. r
The inner ends of the handles 3 are'curved to form cams 9, which are adapted to frictionally engage the upper edges of the rails 6 for securing the clips 7 in adjusted position}, when the handles are moved upwardly to operative position. 7
In operation, toadjust the handles to the desired position, they are swung downwardly to the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2 so as to disengage the cams 9 from the rails 65. To clamp the clips to the rails, the handles are swung upwardly into operative position as shown in full outline in the drawing.
With this improved construction, the greater the pull exerted by the patient on the handles, the greater will be the clamping action which secures the handles against it Although but onespecific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that details of the construction shownrmay be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following; claims.
I claim: c
1. An obstetrical table comprising a top, a pair of rails located at respectively opposite sides of said top and spaced from the edges thereof, a pair of U-shaped clips slidably embracing said rails for adjustment longitudinally of said top, handles pivotally mounted on said clips and adapted to be grasped by the patient, and cams on the inner ends of said handles located in position to friction ally engage said rails for securing said clips in adjusted position when said handles are shifted to operative position at right angles no. to said top, said handles being swingable into positions substantially parallel to said rails for disengaging said cams from said rails.
2. An obstetrical table comprising a horizontal top, apair of pulling handles hinged .5 on respectively opposite sides of said top and adapted to be grasped by the patient, said handles being tiltable in one direction into a horizontal position and adapted when horisaid top,
and means for securing said handles against tlltlng 1n the opposite direction,
said
means also clamping said handles against longitudinal shifting when said handles are disposed vertically.
Signed at Chicago this 5th day of October,
JOSEPH WALTER.
