Description

C. J. HEILEMAN WRIST WATCH BAND Oct. 14, 1930.
Inf/enter m'tfor rge i Filed Feb. 21, 1929 Patented Oct. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES CHARLES J. HEILEMAN, F PARK HILLS, COV'INGTON, KENTUCKY WRIST-WATCH BAND Application filed February 21, 1929. Serial No. 341,792.
This invention relates to wrist-watch bands and its prime object is to provide an extensible wrist-band that is well adapted to be easily passed or slipped over the hand to and from using place on the wrist and at the same time remain a continuous band that is free from any undue spring or drawing tension but otherwise avoiding any liability of the band to drop from said using place. Another material object is to provide a band that possesses all the advantages of'adjustment of a spring-tension device but eliminating such frailty as may be due to any inherent spring action. Still another object is to pro- 75 vide a practically telescopic arrangement for the extension of the band, which is substantial and readily operative and which, when doubled-up or folded together, will fit snugly in a casing that is adapted to this special purpose, being simple, durable, easily made and maintained and artistic, as well, in appearance.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a plan view showing my improvement, including thereunder, an extensible wrist-band with a watch in normal using place therein; Fig. 2, a longitudinal elevation of the band and watch; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, but with the locking-clasp 39 shown thrown open and the band in fullyextended condition for its passing or slipping over the hand of the wearer, to and from using'place; Fig. 4, a longitudinal elevation of the band taken by itself, apart from the 33 watch and in fully-extended condition, with a portion in the length of the band broken out near each end thereof, so as to more clearly show the adjustable and detaining features of the band; and Fig. 5, a perspective view showing the extension features but partly folded and prior to encasing in the hinged clasp-member of the device.
In these views, the wrist-band 1 is provided at each end with a hollow or tubular link 2 that is adapted for pivotal-attachment to the opposite forked ends of a watch or timepiece member 8.
The said wrist-band comprises a series of hinged chain links 4, a pair of slidable 50 links 5 and 6, an elongated hinged link 7 and a casing 8, the latter provided with a hinged lid or cover 9 and adapted to contain the said special links 5, 6 and 7 when duly folded or nested together and placed therein, the link 7 being hinged to the cas- 5:; ing 8 at 10, while the cover 9 is hinged to the casing at 11. The said links 4 may be of any desirable shape and are so formed that the ends of one link are connected to the body of the next link to make or complete 00 a hinge joint, thus resulting in a flexible or pliable self-adapting and comfortable wrist-watch band.
The first special link 5 of the three specials is preferably and notably of U-shape c3 and a two-pronged link 4 is pivotally secured to the rear transverse portion or bar 12 in the usual manner, thus forming a hinge-joint therewith. The ends 13 of the side-bars 15 of said link 5 are bent or turned inwardly and have openings or eyes 14 that are adapted to slide on the parallel sidebars 16, 16, of the next special link 6 of said three specials, while the ends 17, 17, of the said side- bars 16, 16, are bent or turned outwardly and, also, have openings or eyes 18 therein that are adapted to slide on the said parallel side-bars 15 of said U-shape link 5.
The transverse portion or closed end of the next succeeding special link 7 of said three specials is hinged in the casing 8 at 10, and its outer ends are connected to the cross-bar of the said link 6 to form a hinge-joint therewith.
Within the said casing 8 and, also, on the bottom thereof, I provide a strip 21 of sheetmetal on which the cross-members 19 and 20 of the end of the series of links 4 rest, and, on this strip 21, adapted to form an anchorage for the end of the band 1, I provide a pair of hook-formations or lugs 23, 23, that are so spaced apart that the chain formed by the series of links 4 can be readily adjusted in length by distances or intervals" equivalent to or coincident with half the length of a link of said series 4.
The said specially improvised links 5, 6 and 7 are so made that, when they become 7 telescoped and folded or otherwise laid towe gether in the casing 8, they practically become but a single thickness of material in the said casing 8, and the cross-member 12 of the said special link is adapted to engage or fit over the hinge at the inner end of the said special link 7 in the casing 8, the outer cross-member 12 contacting With or engaging the lug 22 in the said casingfor holding the folded or doubled-up special links in closed place in that casing.
The lid;,.0r coyer-plate 9 of the casingis.
provided With indentations or upset-notches 23 that are adapted to co-engage the coi 1'1 ciding indentations or upset-notches 24 on said casing for removablesnap-connection therewith.
AAthu mbpiece 25 eXtends centrally from the outer free end of the said; lid' 9 for readily opening the l claimz- I c In aWrist-Watchfband, a longitudinally clasp when desired.
'or'circumferentially adjustable pair of band- 7 sections each having a series of flexiblyconnectecl link members and with gaps at theiropposite ends, one gap being adapted toaccommodate the Wrist Watch fordisplay ,use and the other gap to containa connecting clasp casing, a hinged closure lid on the clasp casing, anelongated U-shaped link member in the latter gap connected to one of saidband-sections, an elongated link member also of U-shape and slidably connected to the first-named link member, a third U- shaped link member hingedat one end to the second-named link member and at its other 'end to an eye formation in the clasp casing, said last-mentioned U-sliaped link member being adapted to fold'upon the firstmentioned link'members and'be received in said casing, a link contacting lug on said eye formation and a pair of upwardly extending hook formations provided on the inner faceof the casing bottom for adjustable engagement with the end links of the other band-section, for adapting the Wrist-band to ready slipping or passing over the hand and to accommodate Various sizes or girths of hands or Wrists, substantially asoshown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. CHARLES J. HEILEMAN.
