Description

1930. K. PACKENDORF 78,369
PNEUMATIC DISPATCH SYSTEM Filed April 26, 1928 fin en far M WWW- Patented Oct. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES KARL PACKENDOR-F, OF BERLIN-LICHTERFELDE, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO MIX 86 GENEST AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, F BERLIN-SCHONEBERG, GERMANY, A COMPANY OF- GERMANY PNEUMATIC-DISPATCH SYSTEM Application filed April 26, 1928, Serial No. 273,104, and in Germany May 6, 1927.
usefulness of such systems by enabling a single tube-line to be employed for simultaneous trafic in both directions.
To this end according to the present invention a tube line provided with one or more switch tubes or by-pass tubes with the aid of which objects conveyed or delivered,
such as containers for postal packets, may be carried past one another in oppos te directions; this makes it possible to use the line for simultaneous two way tratfic.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated diagrammatically and by way of example in the accompanying drawing which shows a passing point in a tube line of a pneumatic system.
In the drawing a and 0 indicate the ends of two sections of main pneumatic tube line. The length of tube a discharges through a switch or by pass tube 6 into the length 0' and the latter discharges through a similar tube (Z into said length a. There is an opening 6 at the connection between the tubes (0, b and an opening f at that between the tubes 0, (Z. These openings may be provided in the tube walls or may take the form of interruptions separating the tube walls from one another. Between the point of forking g and the opening 6 the section a of main tube line contains a flap valve h and a contact device 2'. The switch 6 is provided with a contact device 70 and a flap valve Z- The section 0 of main tube line is furnished with a flap valve n and a contact device 0 between its point of forking m and the opening f while the switch tube cl contains a contact device ;0 and a flap valve 9 The position of the stops 7 shown indicates diagrammatically in which direction the flap valves h, n, Z, q are respectively capable of moving in the tubes.
The contact devices '5, 29 control the operatin'g fluid in-the section of tube line a by, for
example, regulating the action of a blower associated therewith while the contact devices 0, 7c similarly control the operation of a blower acting on the section of main tube line 0. The blowing arrangements being well known will not be described or illustrated in the present specification.
An arrow 8 indicatesthe direction of action of the operating fluid, namely compressed air, in the section of tube line a and an arrow t the directionthereofin the section of tube line 0.
Objects such as containers for postal packages approaching one another in opposite directions along the sections of tube a, 0 pass the openings 6, f into the switch tubes Z), (Z. The
flap valves g, Z are kept closed by the compressedair acting thereon from the tube sections 4;, 0 respectively so that no obstacle is presented to the entry of the containers into said switch tubes 5, (Z. By means of the contact devices 71, 0 which are actuated by the containers inpassing, the blowers are momentarily set out of operation after which they are set in operation once more by the containers traversing the further contact devices 70, p; said blowers are, however, now arranged to exert a suction action on the main tube sections at, c by, for example, rotating the said blowers in the opposite direction. The flap valves Z, 9 open automatically under the pressure'o'f the outside air acting on the tubes Z), (Z
through the openings (2, f. The containers lo 'cated in said switch tubes I), (Z are therefore conveyed into the sections of main tube line 0, a respectively where they continue their course. The suction in. these line sections maintains the flap valves n, it closed so that said suction can only act over the paths e. c and f, (Z, a but not directly over f, c or e, a and thus exerts its full power in the tubes 6. (Z.
A carrier that under the action oi? the compressed air has passed beyond the flap valve h or n cannot be returned to the station whence it arrives, because the suction then produced will close the flap valves h, n and thus prevent the suction from acting in the tube portions,
he or af. These portions can be made so long that it shall be suflicient to insert the carriers about the same time, or nearly so, if the tubes 5, (Z are located in the middle of the transit tube. Or the tube sections a, c may each contain an arresting device, these devices being equidistant from the tubes 12, d are not I only getting retracted from theiroperative position if both are acted upon by each a carrier or a series of carriers. Inthis Way it can be avoided that the carriers must be dispatched simultaneously or'at a proper time. Such arresting devices are not shownsince not being necessary to perform the invention.
