IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-WICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,796, dated May 23, 1876 application filed April 7, 1876.

My, invention relates to an improvement to facilitate in properly cutting the wick of lamps in trimming, designed more particularly for kerosene-lamps, but equally applicable to all lamps using a flat or similar wick.
The inconvenience and difficulty in properly cutting a lamp-wick, so as to cause it to give an even, clear, and good light, especially by those without a true eye, are too well known to require specification.
By my improvement these difficulties are entirely overcome; and in order that others may be enabled to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The ordinary woven felting or other flat I wicking may be used, and preferredly is taken while yet in the web, and by passing it through rolls or other suitable mechanical device for printing orstamping, it is stamped or printed so as to form lines or marks across the Wick, as shown at a a a in the drawing. These lines should be of such shape as to form a sure guide in trimming the wick while in the lamp, as hereinafter shown, and may he of such color or colors as to be most ornamental while in glass lamps.
Wicking may be manufactured with a View of using this improvement by using colored threads in weaving, thus forming lines or dots across the wick, or by weaving or pressing, as in Marseilles or similar fabrics, thus forming ridges or creases as a guide in trimming.
To use these wicks when manufactured, place them in the lamp-tube in the ordinary manner, and use the lines. ridges, creases, or dots as a guide in trimming the lam p to burn.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Lamp-wicks marked by lines or otherwise, to form a guide in' trimming, substantially as shown and described.
