lMPROVEMENT IN'IATTACHING UTERINE AND OTHER SUPPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,780, dated May 23, 1876; application filed March 2-1, 1876.
marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is aperspective. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a back'view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of pessary. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the pessary. Fig. 6 is a detached view of the perineal pad.
I My invention relates to uterine and other supporters, as hereinafter described and con-- sists of new methods of attachingthem to the person. 1
A is an abdominal pad, provided with I straps a a, forming loops for the elastic belt B, which is provided with a strap, b, and .buckle b and with pessary-supporting straps c 0, buttoned to the belt, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. O isadorsal pad, provided with straps a" a, forming loops for the back part of the belt B, which is provided with strap 1) and buckle b at the ends, and supporting-straps c c, buttoned to the belt. D is a pessarycup, made of vulcanized rubber, silver, or other suitable material, and attached to a stem, E, having the end 01 widened and provided with holes to receive the supporting elastic cords d. a
This arrangement for supporting the pessary allows the natural motions of the uterus, caused by the changes in position and motions of the body and diaphragm, the elastic cords causing the pessary to spring back, supporting the uterus in its normal position, and give ing strength and elasticity to the patients muscles and ligaments.
In case of retroversion the stemE is curved to fit the pelvis. For anteversion the stem is made straight, and a half-inch shorter, because the posterior curve, when turned anteriorly,'presses into the vesica urinaria and urethra, not being adapted to the anterior wall of the pelvis, the depth of the vagina being less anterior-1y than posteriorly. F is a perineal pad, covered with impervious material, and provided with elastic cords f, to tie the pad to the cords d, as seen in Figs. 2 and 6.
These supporters, constructed as described, are readily attached and detached, and all of them, or any number'of them, may be used together, or either one of them alone, as required. When the abdominal and dorsal pads, either or both of them, are not required, they'are detached, and the belt used to support the pessary or perineal pad. And whereand fastened by elastic bands 0, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I, claim the foregoing as my own invention I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
