PANY, 0F LANSING, MICHIGAN, .A CORPORATION 0F `IVIICI-IIGrANf RUNNING-BOARD AND BINDING-smarrnssnnntr i;
Application mea December 19, 1927. seriaiNg.V 241,;23,
This invention relates to a running board and binding strip `assembly and has as its objects to improve generally constructions of this character. Y j 'A The invention relates more vparticularlyfto an improved design of binding or nish moulding for the edge of running boards and the like. An important object of the invention is to provide a lock-on moulding or angle strip so secured to the running board as to eliminate the necessity of employing screws or otherfastening means along the front or outside edge of the running board. To this end the binding or finish strip is formed with a portion adapted to engage the underside of the running board or in a groove formed in the underside of the runningboard with the remainder of the strip which is channelshaped in cross section embracing the longil tudinal edge of the running board. The end-s of the binding strip are bent around and secured into engagement with theends of the `running board and thus rmly held in place;
this construction eliminating the use of unsightly screw heads or other fastening means along the front edge of the running board and i of the labor incident to their use.`
The several objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention, as well as the detailed description of one speciiic embodiment thereof will be made more ap-.
constructed in accordance with this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlargedfragmentary sectional view taken substantially on theplane indicated byline 22 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on therplane indicated by line 3 3 in Figure 1, and l Figure 4f is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modifiedV form of construction particularly adapted for metal running boards.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Figures 1 to 3 thereof `wherein like reference characters indicate like parts it will be noted that there is illustrated a running board or other member 10 upon which aA Amat orother surfacingmember p11 is located;
`Thebinding` or finish strip which is `indicated g'enerally'by the reference character 12 is adapted to engage the edge oftherunning boardalo'ng substantially three sides thereof to produce a finished appearance thereto andl 1s also adapted to overlie the edgev ofthe mat 11 to secure the same to the running board and to preventjthe edgepthereof from being y scuifed up.
In Figures 1 to 3 the woodenrunning boardl 10 `is formed with a grooyeor'rec'ess 13 inthe underside thereof extending longitudinally .l
thereofand yadjacent "the outer-"edge The binding stripl 12V-is formed with a returnbent portion 11i` providing a `flange `or `li`p15 `adapt` ed to lextendv within the recess or `groove 13as most clearly illustrated in Figure"`f2. That portion of the bindirigV `strip which engages the front orlongitudinal free edge ofthe runr ning board issubstaiitially channel-shaped in orosssectionto thusV provide a iiangeor edge portionl adapted to overlie the top side `of the running board and the edgeof the mat l0`- catedthereon-` Thus the binding strip, when n assembledrwiththe running board; is hooked into the groove 13? and vthen 4forced into t ern-" bracing'engagem'ent with fthe edge of the run-` ning board as shown 1n F1gure2.'
rPhe ends'17 of thevbindi-ng strip Varebent': around into engagement with the 'ends ofA therunning board and'to permit this and to form a linishedappearancethe ends *of the top flange 16 of the intermediate portionof `the binding strip are lmitered as indicated at 18 Vto engage the jmitered edge 19 of the top flange-or edgeportion 20'ofthe `ends of the binding strip.` TheV ends `of the binding' strip may lbe `secured iirmly into `'engagement withthe running board by means of screws,`
nails or other fastening elements 21.` `As will *be 7 apparent from Yan` "examination of particularly 'Figures 2' and` 3" the return-bent portion 14: extends only along the intermediate portion of the binding strip and. terminates adjacent the'ends of the running board so that the end portions 17 of the binding strip are substantially inverted L-shaped 1n cross section.
By reason of this construction it is possible t0 quickly apply the binding or finish strip to the running board and to secure the saine firmly in place solely by the use of fastening means such as screws, nails or the like only at the ends of the runningrboard. This not onlya effects an economy inlabor but eliminates the use of screws along the front or outside edge of the running board 'i which are l atv bestunsightly.
In Figure 4. which is `a fragmentaryl sectional View through the frontedge of a metalv running board they running'board is indicated by the reference character 22 and is shown as formed With a' depending apron 23. A matv 24 is located upon the running board. In this form of construction the.V
moulding strip 25 has its lower' edge bent to form a return-bent portion 26 Which has aV-hook-on engagement With the lower? edge of apron 23 While the remainder of* the moulding strip embraces the running'board and overlies the mat asin the previously described construction. The `ends of the moulding strip will be bent and secured to the ends of the running board as inV the first described form.
While tWo embodiments of the invention` have been described herein somewhat in detail it will be readily apparent that various modifications of the specific structures illustrated4 may beresorted towithout departingfromthe spirit and scope of this invention and to this end reservation is made to make such changes as may come Within the purl View of the accompanying claim.
IVhat I claim asl my invention is The combinationV With a runningA boardv having, anouter longitudinal edge, ends,
and agroove in its under side adjacent its outer longitudinal edge, of a preformed binding strip Uv-shaped in longitudinal contour having an intei'mediatejportion of substantially channel shape iny cross section, the
one edge of said intermediate-vp'ortiony being bent for engagement insaid groove, rsaid binding strip alsor having end portions substantially-inverted L-shaped in cross vsection adapted for engaging the ends ofthe said running board, whereby said binding strip may be hooked into the groove on the running board and thenv forced into embracing engagement With the said outer longitudinalVV edge and the ends of the running board and means for securing the end portions of said binding strip to the ends of' said running board. p
In testimony whereof I Vaffix my signature`.M
