V The invention relates particularly to a spray nozzle Construction and mounting for oilburners of the typei-nwhich the combustible mixture is sprayed into a combustion chamber. 5 I i 1 Thisapplication-is a division of myapplication Serial No. 149,042, filed November 18,1926, covering an oil burner; For a dis closure'of one form ofoil burner in which 1 thenozzle construction herein shown may be used reference maybe had to application Serial No. 90,452, filed February 25, 1926, by Gustaf David Sundstrand.*-
The primary object of the presentinventionis to provide a new and improved oil' burner having a nozzle structure'and-mounb ing therefor' arranged to provide. an air jacket about the nozzle so as to prevent the l nozzle frombecoming excessivelyiheated and thereby avoid clogging: of the nozzle due to t the carbonizing of the oil therein. Other objectsand advantages will become apparent fromithe. following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in whichz" V i Figure 1 is averticalsectionalview of an apparatus embodying the preferred form of I the invention,the view beingtaken approximately on the line 1- -1" 6f Fig. I Fig. 2 isia detail front view of a plate or casting which is adapted to close the opening through which coal is ordinarily introduced into the ordinary house-heating furnace.
The invention will beherein described as it is customarily applied to an ordinary do niestic furnace originally 1 intended to burn coal'or other. solidfuel, but it will be understood that the invention is not limited in all its aspects to'such use. 1 v i In the drawi gs the invention is embodied in 'nieans adapted tospray a combustible mixture of oil and air into a combustion chamber (not shown), said spraying'means comprising anozzle whichis supported just inside the furnace by meansof a rectangular plate. or" casting which is substituted i for the door that normally closes the openingthrough' whichicoa-l. is introduced into the furnace. The plate or casting referred to is shownfin 'Fig'; .2 and is designated 1. It
is rigidly secured in position by means of bolts extending through openings 2. In said ATENroFi-"i g plateis an inspection opening 3 which is normally closed by hinged door' (not shown). I
The nozz V having-a bore 6, the lower portion o fithebore being enlarged to form a ehamber 7. ,To
the lower portion ofjthebody 5 iss'eeured a.
nozzle or funnel 8 which, has a scr ewof the walls of thechamber 'lf. In" the inthread engagement with the "lower [portion '1 ner end of the funnel Slisfa discharge orispond with the interior taper ofthe nozzle 8. The screw 10 is adjusted so asto leave an annular space betweenlthe conical end of the screw andthe nozzle 8. An axial duct 11 extends from oneend to the other of the screw 10. The upperend ofthe bore 6'is normallyclosed means of a screwplug 12, which plugmay be removed when it is desirable to adjust the screw10 orclean'out theparts.
Fuel oil under pressure: supplied through a tube 13 which is connected to the body 5 at'let and communicates with a pas sage 15 which. communicates with the bore 6 at a point between the adjusting screw 10 and the screwplu'g 12;
Compressedair'is suppliedthrough a 16 which is connected to the body 5fat17. and communicates with a passage ldthat extends v It will be seen that (511" suppliedthroughf its lower wall'19 -of the chamber-19. The body.
5 is supported within the chamber 19 by means of the funnel 8 which engages the sides of. the opening 20 and by an adjusting screw 21 "on wlrich'the outer end of "the body rests;
fuel will be so discharged at the proper-angle,
vthe body '5 issimply drawn back fa r enough to allowit to fulcrum on some portion of the walls o fthe opening 20. It willbe understood that there neednot be a tight fit at all points between the nozzle and the wallsofjtheopening 20. After the bodyh has been set in .position' to direct the sprayto the proper point in thecombustion chaniber (not shown), the 5 is secured in such position by means offa set screw extending through alweb 2 3 which formsa forwa-rdjextension of the. side walls 19 of the chamber 19. The
tubes '13 and I6 are sufficiently flexible to permit oflthe described adjustment of the nozzle structure 5. i Y .;:A sshoivh in'FigQ 1, the nozzle body 5 does not completely fill the chamber 19, there-being a space; below, behind and above I the nozzle body so as to permitair to flowby convection from the lower portion of the-chamber 19 up and out through the upper portion thereof. The. flow of air thus obtainedv serves "to pro tect the nozzle structure from" Itheintense heat within the combustion cham'ben In the form herein illustrated, an electric spark ignition means is shown which has a pair er spark termina ls26 positioned aldjacent the path of a spray of fuel fromv the nozzle 8."v
Further description of the ignition device, is not deemed tobe necessary sinceit is describedin detail and claimed in my'copend ing application Serial No. 149,042 filed No vember 18, 1926. V v
' From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the invention pr'ovides astruc ture which will serve effectively to increase the efficiency of the oil burner since the pro vision of the air jacket aboutthenozzle S will prevent'thenozzle from becoming excessively heated 'and will ,prevent cloggihg of the nozzle which would ordinarily be caused by such excessive heat, V
It will/also be apparent that theinvention provides a fuel nozzle mounting wherein the fuel nozzle isJ-rea'di ly -accessible ,forad-just ment or cleaning-from the outside of the p I claim as my invention:
