IMPROVEMENT IN ELEVATORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,739, dated May 23, 1876; application filed May 1, 1876.-

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB MEYER, of Hollowayville, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, hay e invented a new and Improved Wagon -Bod y and Hay-Rack Elevator, of which the following is a specification: The figure is a side view of my improved deshall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and easily operated.

The invention consists ill the combination of the post and its cross-beam and braces, the

crank-shafts and their ratchetwheels and pawls, the ropes and their guide-pulleys, and the bails with each other; and inthe combination of the frame and its rods with the bails of the elevator, as hereinafter fully described.

A is a post of suitable height, the lower end of which is set in the ground three feet, .more or less. To thenpper end of the post A is at-, tached a cross beam. B, which is strengthened by the inclined braces (3,,the upper ends of which are attached to the said beam B, and their lower ends are attached to the post A.

With the opposite sides of the lower part of the post A are connected two shafts or drums, D, to the ends of which are attached the cranks d, by which they are operated. The shafts D are provided with ratchet-wheels E and pawls e, to hold them securely in any position into which they may be turned. To the shafts D are attached the ends of two ropes,

F, which pass up along the sides of the post. A, over guide-pulleys G, pivoted to plates H,

attached to the upper part of the post A, and over guide-pulleys I, attached to the ends of the cross-beam B. To the other ends of the ropes F are attached hooks, to receive the eyes of the bails J,'two of which are connected with the ends of each ropeF.

For raising a hay-rack, the four ends of the two bails J are connected with the said hayrack, and the rack is raised by turning the crank d. I

For raising a wagon-body, a rectangular frame, K, is connected with the four 'ends of the two bails J. To the lower sides of the end parts of the side bars of the frame K are pivoted four rods, L, the lower ends of which are designed to be connected with the ends of the cross-bars ofthe-wagon-body, or with other cross-bars placed beneath'said body, so that by operating the crank-shaft D d the wagonbody may all be raised together, and without disarranging any of its parts.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr l. The combination of the post A and its orossbeani and braces B O, the crank-shafts D d and their ratchet-wheels andpawls E e, the ropes F and-their guide-pulleys G I, and the bailsJ with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination of the frame K'and rods L with the bails J of the elevator, substantiallytas herein shown and described.
