Description
Patented Sept. 23, 1930 UNITED STATES. RAT
ENTOFFICE JOHN G. KocH, or PETERSBURG, NEBRASKA Application filed August 15, 1925f Seria1,1iTo 2 99,756.
that the obstructions lodged upon the shovels V will be removed as the cultivator is traveling across the field. 7
A still further object of the invention is to provide a deviceof this character which is extremely simple in construction. eflicient in operation, and one which can be manufactured at a very small cost.
l/Vith invention resides in the novel features of con struction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in 25 the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 83 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the beam of a conventional form of two row cultivator, the rear end of which is curved downwardly and has fixed thereto the usual shovels 2. v
A clamp 3 is fixed to the innermost beam of the cultivator and serves to securely hold the forward end of a bar 4. clamped to the beam. The bar 4 is offset laterally with respect to the beam 1 and extends diagonally across the rear face of a'rectangular sheet metal fender 5, and to which it is secured in any approved manner, said bar having a bearing 6, the purpose of which will appear later.
The cleaner comprises a hub 7 having a plurality of radialarms 8 formed integral therewith, the free ends of which are pointed, as at 9, in order that they will more readily penetrate the earth. The hub is provided with a reduced axle 10 which rotatably en- Another object of the invention is to pro these and other objectsin view, this gages a bearing 11 formed in the fender 5 and the bearing 6 formed in the bar 4;. This axle is threaded as at l2, forlreceiving the V nut 13. It: will thus be seen that the axle is rotatably mounted in'order that when the cultivator is drawn across thefieldthe hub can freely rotate as the pointed ends of the v arms successively penetrate the earth.
Frequently stall-1s and weeds will be caught between a pair of the shovels, thus retarding the free movement of thecultivator...
It has heretofore been necessary to stop the cultivator and remove these obstructions. This objection is eliminated by the applica 7 tion of the cleaner, since it will be obvious that as the cultivator is in motion rotary movement will be impartedrto the cleaner and the arms 8 will force and lift the obstructions from between the shovels in order that it will not be necessary to stop the cultivator when the shovels become clogged.
While the device is primarily designed for use in connection with two row cultivators, it will be of course understood that it is not limited to such use, since it will effectively operate in connection with a single row cultivator.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, and proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
What is claimed is V 1. The combination with a cultivator ineluding a beam and shovel,of a bar secured to the beam and having its fixed end offset laterally and extended rearwardly and downwardly in spaced relation to the shovel, said bar being provided with a bearing, a fender secured to the bar and provided with a bearing registering with the bearing in the bar, and a cleaning device mounted for r0- tation on the inner face of the fender and including a hub having arms radiating therefrom, said hub being provided with an (ilk to the forward portion of the beam and having its fixed end offset laterally and extended rearwardly and downwardly in spaced relation to the shovel, a substantially rectangular fender plate secured to the inner face of the bar, said bar and fender plate being pro-' vided with alined bearings, and a cleaning device mounted for rotation on the inner face of the fender and including a hub having arms radiating therefrom and provided with po nted terminals, said hub belng provided with a reduced axle fitting within the alined bearings, and a fastening device engaging the axleand bearing against the outer face of the bar. In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature.
