Description

Sept. 23, 1930. G. s. WITHAM, 5R 1,776,305
' DEVICE FOR RECORDING AND INDICATING BEAT SETTINGS Filed'May 31, 1927 Patented Sept. 23, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT? OFFICE GEORGE s. WITHAM, sa, or
HUDSON FALLS, NEW YORK DEVICE FOR nnconnme AND INDICATING BEATE-n SETTINGS Application filed May 31,
very large degree the character of the sheet plate, then a soft roll is gradually lowered during the process,
of paper which is ultimately produced. For example, if soda pulp is beaten quickly with sharp knives and the beater roll is close down on to the stationary knives or bed spongy paper resembling blotting paper is produced. On the other hand, if a strong sulphite pulp is beaten slowly for a longer time, such as for eight or ten hours, with dull knives and the paper then a close dense sheet of parchment is obtained.
Similarly if the same stock is treated in dilferent ways, the resulting product will vary. If the stock is difierent, of course a different operation will be necessary. More over,'it is very important to determine accurately the setting of the beater roll since a paper resembling 05 difference of one-sixteenth or one-thirty-sec- 0nd of an inch in the relation of the beater roll to the bed plate may mean the diiference between good paper stock and poor stock.
Notwithstanding the value and importance of this operation, there has been up to the. present time no adequate way of indicating a relative position of the beater roll and bed plate nor any means of recording the operation in order that it may be exactly reproduced at a later time for the purpose of precisely duplicating the character of paper formed.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide a simple and efiicient means which can be attached to the usual adjustable beater roll bearings for the purpose of operating an indicator or accessory to indicate at all times the precise setting of the beater roll. The mechanism or accessory also contains means for making a record of the various settings of the beater roll and the time intervals for each setting in order that an operation may be exactly reproduced at some later time.
Details of the invention will be apparent 1927. Serial No. 195,338.
from the following description and will be set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of paper roll with the present invention connected thereto.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a side elevation and Figure 4 a front elevation of a modified form.
There is illustrated a portion-of a beater roll 1 having a shaft 2 so journalled in a bearing 2 that it is adjustable vertically in any desired manner. A roll bearing cage 3 is attached to the end of the shaft 2 independently of the bearing 2 A short rod 4 is connected to said bearings 3 and is adjustable therewith. Extending from this is a rod 5, the operation of which is hereinafter set forth.
Braces 7 and 8 are carried by the frame 6 of the beater mechanism and support a drum 9. Arms 10 and 11 are carried drum and have at their free ends tubular guides 12 and 13 for the upper end of the rod 5. The upper portion of this rod is provided on one side with a rack 14 which meshes with pinion 15 which is pivoted at 16 and has a spindle 17 as shown inFigure 1. The other end of this spindle carries an arm 18 which is provided with a recording pen 19 which will. keep a record upon the usual disc sheet 20 which is connected to the shaft of and arranged to be rotated by clockwork 21in the usual manner.
A scale 22 in the form of an arc is carried by the braces 7 and 8 and an indicating pointer 28 is pivoted at 24; to the drum memher and has at one end a pin and slot connection 25 with the vertical movable rod 5.
it will be apparent from the above description that whenever the beater roll 1 and its shaft 2 is adjusted to or from the bed plate the rod 5 will have a vertical movement in one direction or the other independently of the exact position of the bearing 2 and the pointer 23 will always designate on the scale 22 the particular setting of the beater roll. At the same time the recording pen 19 will record each setting of the beater roll and will indicate the time of such settings.
by said I Til 30 which meshes with a pinion 31 mounted on a pivot 32 and provided with an arm carrying a recording pen 3% which moves over the surface of the paper on the drum 29. A bracket arm 37 depends from the drum 28 and to the lower end thereof a pointer 38 is pivoted at '39 and cooperates with a scale 36 carried by the brace 27 and an auxiliary brace 35. The other end of the pointer 33 has a pin and slot connection l0 with a vertically movable rod 5. The operation of the device is the same as that disclosed in the first modification.
It will be obvious that the invention provides means for 'idicating at any given time the precise setting of the beater roll and also provides means for obtaining a record showing the setting at any particular time and the length of time that this setting was maintained. By controlling: the in dice-ting and recording mechanism directly from the bearings on the beater roll, a perfectly accurate result is obtained. if this red 5 is connected to other up and down moving parts, there is not only danger of lost motion but the calibration of the scale is rendered more difficultand the result is likely to be inaccurate. The necessity of a very accurate result is apparent when it is remembered that a difference in the setting of the beater roll of a very small fraction of an inch may make a remarkable difference in thecharacter of the product produced.
As above stated, the beater roll shaft is journalled in any desired manner so that it may be adjusted. The particular form of adjustment forms no part of the invention and there is merely illustrated supports 41 for the journals 2 of the shaft, the ends of which are carried by members e2 which may be vertically adjusted by means of worm and gear mechanism operating by a hand wheel 43. This mechanism is duplicated at opposite sides of the machine. Any other roll or desired form of adjustment may be employed.
It will be observed that an important feature of the invention is the provision of a connection between the beater roll shaft and the accessory mechanism including a bearing device having an element connected to one end of the shaft and coaxial therewith and a second bearing element mounted in bearing relation with the first named element, the first element being rotatable with respect to the second element. By means of this bearing device, an accurate record and indication of the roll settings is obtained even if there be some lost motion between the roll shaft and its supporting bearings.
It will be evident that the precise construction may be modified in various details without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention; V
1. In paper making machinery wherein a heater roll has its shaft adjustably mounted, the combination of roller bearings carried by and coaxial with said beater roll, a rod connected to said bearings, recording mechanism, a rack on said rod, apinion meshing with said rack, and, means whereby the movement of the pinion varies the position of the recording mechanism. r r
2. In paper making machinery wherein a beater roll has its shaft adjustably mounted, the combination of roller bearingscarried by and coaxial with said shaft, a rod connected to said roller bearings, a nd means supporting the rod for right line movement to operate an accessory mechanismj f 3. In papermakingmachinery wherein a beater roll has its shaft adjustably mounted, the combination of bearingsfixed to and ecoaxial with said beater roll shaft and a. rod connected to said bearings and subject'to the adjustment thereof to operate a device for showing the different adjusted positions occupied by said shaft. 7 j
l. The combination of ra beater roll shaft, means adjustably mounting said shaft for vertical movements, an accessory mechanism having a graduated scale and a member mounted for movements with'respect to the scale, and means connecting said shaft and said accessory mechanism for operating the latter when the shaft is vertically adjusted to show the different positions occupied by said roll, said means including a bearing device having an element secured to one end of the shaft and coaxial with said shaft, and a second element mounted inrbearlng relation with the first element, said first element being rotatable with respect to said second element.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto'subscribed my name.
