This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding beds and has for its primary object to associate a folding bed with an article of furniture such as p a bedroom dresser or chest of drawers, a

trunk, a living-room chair or similar article of furniture, whereby the bed when in folded condition is completely confined within the article of furniture and hidden from l View.

With the above and other objects in view. that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying draw ings and claimed. c

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 8, the reference numeral 1 designates a trunk body provided with a hinged cover 2, a folding bed frame being associated with the trunk to beconfined therein when out of use and in folded condition. The folding bed comprises a plurality of side supporting legs 3 carrying floor engaging feet 4, the oppositely positioned legs 3 at each side of the bed frame being connected by horizontal brace rods 5 and crossed brace rods 6 extending from points adjacent the upper ends of the side legs 3 to points at opposite sides ofthe center of the horizontal crossbrace 5 as clearly shown in Figure 1.

The upper side rails of the bed structure comprise crossheads 7 anchored to the upper angle end 3 of each leg 3 as shown in Figure 18, with a pair of rail sections 8 between adjacent ends of the cross heads 7 between each pair of side legs 3. The rail sections 8 are hinged as at 9 at their outer ends to the cross heads 7 to swing downwardly.while adjacent ends of the rail sections 8 are hinged together at 10 at the upper sides thereof to permit downward swinging movement of the rail sections. Diagonal brace bars extend between the side legs 8 and adjacent ends of the rail sections 8, the bracing links 11 having a hinge connection 12 at adjacent ends to limit pivotal movement thereof in onedirection, the outer end of the lower link being pivota'lly connected as at 13 to the cross arm 13* and having a bevelled lower end 11 abutting the leg 3 to brace the links 11 on the leg 3, while the upper end of the upper link11 is hingedly connected to the adjacent rail section v8. The upper hinge connection for the upper link 11 comprises an angle bracket 11*, shown in Figure 19, that is anchored to the rail section 8 and to which the link is pivoted, the upper end of the upper link also being bevelled or diagonallyformed to engage the rail section for bracing the links. Brace links 1% connect the lower ends of the side legs 3, the same being pivoted at their outer ends as at 15 to said legs, while the adjacent ends thereof are pivotally connected together as at 16 in a manner to permit limited swinging movement in one direction as will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figure 1. When the folding bed frame is extended in its step-up position as shown in Figure 1, a strong and substantial construction results with the legs 3 rigidly positioned and maintained against any collapsing movement.

End extension top rails 8" are hinged as at one end as at 9 to the 'end plate 7 of the side supporting legs 3 adjacent the trunk body 1 with the other ends of the extensions 8 hinged as at 17 to a guide block 18 yertically slidable in a. perpendicular' corner guide 19 set into, a corner of the trunk body 1 for purposes presently to appear. The corner posts 20 of a headrest are hinged at their lower ends as at 21 to the adjacent ends of the top rail extensions 8, being connected by cross-slats 22 while brace links hinged together at their adjacent as at 2i are connected at their outer ends as at E25 and 26 to the upper ends of the peas 20 and rail extensions 8 respectively.

A canvas or other fabric sheet 27 is stretched between the upper side rails of the folding bed for the support of a bed pad. mattress or the like and the clip 28 shown in detail in Figure 8 1s employed for supporting the fabllc siieet .l 111 ns opeiatns position. The clip 28 has an angle end 29 engageable over the outerside edge of each upper side rail with'the opposite lnner end of the clip provided'with a hook 30 to be received in an adjacent eye in the edge of the fabric sheet. The clips 28 are supported at the upper sides of the side rail as shown in Figure 2 with the fabric sheet 27 maintained in a substantially stretched and taut condition for the support of suitable bedding.

When it is desired to collapse the foldable bed and place the same in the trunk body 1 from its operative set up position shown in Figures 1 and 2. the head rest is collapsed by moving the links 23 upon their hinged connection 24 so that the head posts 20 may swing forwardly and downwardly to lie upon the end extensions 6 of the upper sido'rails. The several links 11 and 14- are moved on their pivotal connection while the railsect-ion hinges are collapsed so that'the side supporting legs 3 may be moved to positions a djaeent each other as shown in Figure 4. The collapsed bed structure is thenshifted to a position overlying the trunk body 1 as'shown in Figure 5 and thereafter lowered into the trunk body and at which time, theguide blocks 18 slide downwardly in the guides ,19.

In the form of the invention shownin Figures 9 to 11, the folding bed is associated with an article offurniture. such as"a liv ing-room chair or the like, the chair 32 as shown in Figure. 10 having the seat cushion 33 removed, thefolding bed frame being of a construction similar to the form of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 8 with the exception that the end extensions 8 of the upper-side rails are hingedly connected at their innerends as at 34. to the forward side portions of a U-shaped frame 35 that is supported upon springs'36 vnormally forming the resilient support for the seat cushion 33 as shown in Figure 9. The'front drop board 37 of the chair when in" its closed position as shown in Figure 9 carries coil springs 36 for the resilient support of the seat cushion. The bed frame is illustrated in Figure 1.0 in its extended set-up position to receive the fabric sheet 27 shown in: Figure 2 for the support of bedding. WVhen the bed frame is folded as illustrated in Figure 9. the upper end of the bed frame is confined within a pocket formed in the bottom of the seat cushion 33, while the upper side-rail sections are confined between the spaced lugs 38 at the sides of the frame 35.

In the form of the invention shown in Figures 12 to 15, the folding bed frame is associated with an article of bed-room furniture such as a dresser or chest of drawers, the'furof the bed and also the brace bars between the walls of the compartment 4.0. Also, the side supporting legs 3 carry roller casters 4* to facilitate positioning of the folding bed in the article of furniture and removal thereof.

In each form of the invention, the folding bed is completely hidden from view when out of use and occupies a minimum of space in the article of furniture with which the same is associated. The brace bars between the oposite side legs as well as the legs at each side upper rail sections provides a. rigid'bed structure when the same is set up for use. While clips 28 of the type shown in Figure 8 are illustrated for supporting the fabric sheet between the upper side rails of the bed, it is to be understood that the fabric sheet may be stitched at its longitudinal edges to the upper side rails to be folded with the bed frame.

While there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim I 1. In combination with an article of furniture, a folding bed formed of hinged sections to occupy a space within the article of furni ture, said bed comprising side legs, top rails formed of hinged sections foldable downwardly, brace rods between the top rail sections and the side legs, a hinged extension of the top rails connecting the bed to the article of furniture, and a collapsible head rest on the top rail extensions.

2. In combination with an article of furniture, a folding bed formed of hinged sections to occupy a space within the article of furniture, said bed comprising side legs, top rails formed of hinged sections foldable down wardly, brace rods between the top rail sections and the side legs, hinged brace rods between the legs at each side of the bed, rigid brace bars between the legs at opposite sides of the bed, a hinged extension of the top rails connecting the bed to the article of furniture, and a collapsible head rest on the top rail extensions.

3. In combination with an article of furniture, a folding bed formed of hinged sections to occupy a space within the article of furniture, said bed comprising side legs, top rails formed of hinged sections foldable downwardly, brace rods between the top rail sections and the side legs, a hinged extension of the top rails connecting the bed to the article of furniture, a collapsible head rest on the top rail extensions, a fabric sheet secured at its edges to the upper side rails, and a slotted guide connection between the article of furniture and attached end of the bed frame.
