Description

Sept. 23, 1930. w. HARASIMIAK COMBINATION KEY, PENCIL SHARPENER, .AND CIGAR CLIPPER Filed Jan. 24, 1950 Patented Sept. 23, 1930 WACLAW HARASIMIAK, OF CAMDEN, NEXV JERSEY COMBINATION KEY, PENCIL SHARPENER, AND CIGAR CLIPPER Application filed January 24, 1930. Serial No. 423,149.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combination lock key, pencil sharpener, and cigar clipper.
The primary object of the invention is to provide in combination with the gripping end or handle of a lock key, a combination pencil sharpener and cigar clipper, the usual opening in the key handle forming a part of the cigar clipper with a single cutting member or blade for the pencil sharpener that is movable over the opening to provide a clipper for the end of a cigar.
With the above and other objects in View that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an edge elevational view of a combination lock key, pencil sharpener and cigar clipper constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view showing the combination pencil. sharpener and cigar clipper associated with the handle end of the y;
Figure 3 is an edge elevational View, opposite to the illustration in Figure 1 Figure t is a side elevational view, opposite to the illustration in Figure 2 with the cutting blade illustrated in full lines in position as a pencil sharpener and further illustrated by dotted lines in the position of a cigar clipper;
Figure 5 is an end elevational View showing a cigar with its tip end positioned in the cigar clipper; 1
Figure 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 66 of Figure 2 showing the tensioned finger or pin for holding the cutting blade in pencil sharpening position;
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view taken on line 7--7 of Figure 2 showing the single cutting blade for use with both the pencil sharpener and cigar clipper;
Figure 8 is a side elevational view of another form of the invention showing a finger nail cleaner hinged to the handle end of the key; and
Figure 9 is an end elevational view of the finger nail cleaner moved 011 its hinged con nection to opposite position.
As shown in Figures 1 to 7', the key embodies a blade or shank 10 provided upon one side edge thereof with usual key wards 11, the shank 10 being carried by a handle end'comprising a plate 12. The handle plate 12 at its juncture with the key. shank 10 carries a laterally positioned socketed conical barrel13 forming a part of the pencil sharpener to receive the end of the pencil 14 shown in Figure 2, the opposite side of the plate 12 being cut away at 15 permitting the projection therethrough of a limited area of the pencilend for engagement by a cutting or shaving blade.
The shaving blade 16 of tapering form as illustrated in Figure at has opposite cutting edges 17 and 18 and is flatly engaged with the side face of the plate 12 opposite the pencil receiving barrel 13. The narrow end of the cutting or shaving blade 16 is pivota-lly mounted as at 19 adjacent one side edge of the handle plate 12 and at the opposite wider end thereof carries a laterally and inwardly directed block 20 that rides upon the arcuate bottom wall 21 of a side recess 22 cut in the edge of the handle plate 12 clearly shown in Figures 2 and 6, the recessing and shouldering of one end of the handle plate 12 delining an arcuate rib 2.3 positioned between the blade 16 and block 20 forming a guide for the blade 16 in its swinging movement upon its pivotal mounting 19. When the blade 16 extends substantially transversely ofthe handle plates 12, the cutting edge 17 thereof is operatively positioned relative to the pencil receiving barrel 13 to function as a pencil sharpener and to retain the blade 16 so positioned, a spring pressed locking pin is carried by the block 20 for engagen'ient with the adjacent end of the arcuate shoulder 21. As shown in Figure 6, the block 20 carried by the blade 16 is provided with an opening extending from the inner end thereof to receive a pin 21 that is spring pressed as at for inward movement to cause the pin 241 to enter a socket in the arcuate shoulder 21, the outer end of the pin 2 being provided with a handle or button 26 to facilitate operation thereof or withdrawal against spring tension thereon to permit pivotal movement of the blade 16 upon its mounting 19.
The handle plate 12 is provided with a tapering opening 27 through which the tip end of the cigar 28 is adapted to be projected as shown in Figure 5 and upon releasing the pin from engagement with the handle plate 12, the blade 16 may be moved upon its pivotal mounting to project the cutting edge 18 thereof over the opening 27 for clipping the end of the cigar, An additional opening 29 is provided in the handle plate 12 whereby the device may be suspended upon a key ring, chain or otherwise conveniently carried.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 8 and 9, an arm 30 is pivotally mounted atone end as at 31 upon the side of the handle plate 12 carrying the pencil sharpener barrel 13 and has an angle end 32 overlying the button 26 of the tensioned pin when in operative position as shown in Figure 9, the arm 30 being moved upon its hinge mounting 12 so that the angle end 32 thereof maybe utilized as a. nail cleaner.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent and it being noted that the handle end of the key carries a combination pencil sharpener and cigar clipper wherein a single cutting element or blade that is pivotally mounted forms a part of the pencil sharpener and cigar clipper and when used as a pencil sharpencr, the blade is securely anchored in posi tion by the tensioned pin 24.
lVhile there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1 A combination pencil sharpener and cigar clipper comprising a plate having a barrel for the reception of a pencil and an opening in the plate laterally and transversely of the barrel and the blade of the pencil sharpener being pivotally mounted to swing across the opening in contact with the plate for using the opening as a cigar clipper.
2. A device of the class described comprising a key handle of plate formation, a pencil sharpener barrel at one side of the plate, said plate having an opening therein through which the tip end of a cigar may be projected, a cutting blade pivoted on the plate, means for locking said blade adjacent the barrel for use as a pencil sharpener and releasable for movement of the blade across the opening for use as a cigar clipper.
8. A device of the class described compris ing a key handle of plate formation, a pencil sharpener barrel at one side of the plate, said plate having an opening therein through which the tip end of a cigar may be projected, a cutting blade pivoted on the plate, means for locking said blade adjacent the barrel for use as a pencil sharpener and releasable for movement of the blade across the opening for use as a cigar clipper, the lock for the blade including a tensioned pin carried by the swinging end thereof and engageable with the handle.
in testimonv whereof I alfix my signature.
WAOLAW HARASIM an.
