Description
Sept. 23, 1930. P. F. WILLIAMS 1,776,275
ELECTRICAL COINBCTIR um am 17, 1922 Patented Sept. 23, 1930 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PAUL F. WILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T G & W ELECTRIC SPECIALTY 00., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS ELECTRICAL CONN ECTER My invention relates to electrical con-, necters, particularly of the kind commonly known as potheads.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and advantageous construction of device of the class specified.
Another object of the invention is to simplify and improve the connecting devices by which the electrical conductors are conapplicable to potheads of other kinds and varieties.
Referring to the drawings, I show a structure comprising a lower member 1 and upper member 2, both preferably made of porcelain and the member 2 being preferably in the form of amp to fit on top of and to some extent extend down upon member 1. The member 1 is to receive the cable and the member 2 to receive the overhead con- (it provided with a downwardly extending plug portion 7 the lower portion of which is screw threaded as at 8. Threaded washers 9 and 10 hold the plug member 7 and therefore the terminal 4 firmly in position in cap 1 1. member 2. A secondary plug member 11 is secured to the lower end of member 7, as by providing it with a threaded end 12 adapted to fit into the threaded socket 13 in the lower end of member 7. Member 11 is provided with an enlarged head 14 adapted to fit into socket 15 at upper end of terminal 3.
=member as at 16 so as to permit it to slide readily 1922; Serial No. 569,057.
A sleeve 16 is fitted over member 7, being interiorly threaded to screw on threads 8 of 7. Lower end of sleeve 16 is split into and out of socket 15 in terminal 3, thereby making an electrical connection and breaking the same. Member 11, particularly head 14 thereof, is for taking up an arc, should any be formed on breaking circuit. Ring 19 is screwed on upper threaded end 18 of terminal 3, and also forms an arc taking member. By making members 11 and 19 removable, they may be readily replaced and new ones substituted when worn or damaged.
' Threaded nut 20 is arranged on terminal 3 to cooperate with internal flange 21 on member 1 and also with member 19 to hold terminal 3 in position in member 1.
The arrangementforms a very simple, practical and effective construction for making and breaking the circuit, and for taking up arcs in case there are any formed in operation of the device.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without depart ing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is 1.-YA device of the class specified having separable outside members provided. with terminals, said terminals having electrical contact members for making and breaking connection, and one of said terminals being provided with an arcing device which engages the terminal and also engages the corresponding outside member to hold the terminal in position.
2. A device of the class specified having separable outside members provided with terminals, said terminals having electrical contact members for making and breaking connection and one of said terminals having an arcing device engaging the terminal and also engaging one of the outside members.
3. A device of the class specified having a tubular insulating member and acap of insulatingmaterial detachably mounted on the upper end of said insulating member, terminals for said insulating member and said cap,
the terminal of the insulating member having a socket at the end nearest the cap member, a plug member carried by the cap terminal, said plug member having its lower portion screw threaded, an interiorly threaded sleeve fitted over said threaded plug member, the lower end of said sleeve being split and being adapted to fit into the socket of said tubular member terminal, threaded collars on said tubular member terminal and means on the I tubular member for engaging said threaded collars.
4. A device of the class specified having a tubular insulating meinberand a cap of insulating material detachably mounted on the upper end of said insulating member, terminalsfor said insulating member and said cap, the terminal of the insulating member having a socket at the end nearest the cap mem ber, a plug member carried by the cap terminal, said plug member having its lower port1on screw threaded, an interiorly threaded sleeve fitted over said threaded plugmem- I ber, the lower end of said sleeve being split and being adapted to fit into the socket of said tubular member terminal, threaded collars on said tubular member terminal and means on the tubular member for engaging said threaded collars, said meanscomprising an inwardly projecting rim on the tubular member.
5. A device of the class specified having a tubular insulating member and a cap of insulating material detachably mounted on the upper end of said insulating member, terminals for said insulating member and said cap, the terminal of the insulating member having a socket at the end nearest the cap member, a plug member carried by the cap terminal, said plug member having its lower portion screw threaded, an interiorly threaded sleeve fitted over said threaded plug mem ber, the lower end of said sleeve being split and being adapted to fit into the socket of said tubular member terminal, a detachable arcing terminal on said plug terminal enclosed except at its end by said threaded sleeve and a detachable arcing ring on said insulator terminal adapted to cooperate with the arcing terminal on the plug member.
