SLICING MACHINE Application filed May 10, 1928, Serial No. 276,555, and in the Netherlands June 9, 1927.
This invention relates to an actuating device for imparting reciprocating movement to a carriage of sub plate of machines for slicing food.
An obj ect of this invention is to replace the expensive gearing usually found in the kdrive of these machines with amore simplified and economical driving mechanism in which gearin@ is eliminated. Y

Rising from the bed plate 20 are brackets supporting the slide rods 22 and 23 upon which the carriage 1 isslidably mounted. The knife 12 is journaled in a bracket 21 and is driven through the engagement of a ratchet 9 with a chain 10'which in turn drives vthe chain 11 on the knife sprocket. The ratchet 9 engages the chain 10 only during the movement of the carriage 1 toward the knife, the ratchet sliding idly over the chain in the reverse direction. This arrangement saves the energy that would be wasted in reversing the direction of rotation of the knife at every back and forward movement of the carriage. The carriage is provided with guides 18 to slidably receive a meat table, movable by well known mechanism not shown, toward the plane of the knife. Bearings 13, 14 and 16 are secured to the frame of the machine and in the bearings 13 land 14 is journaled'a shaft 2 having a hand wheel 3 secured toits end.l The end of the shaft 2 opposite the wheel 3 has an angularly disposed part 2 which may be integral with the shaft 2 or it may be a'separately formed element. The bearing 16 alined with the bearings 18 and 14 slidingly and rotatably receives the shaft 17. The shaft 17 has an angular disposed end 15 similar to the end 2 on the shaft 2.
The faces on the angularly disposed portions 2 and 15 are parallel and extend from opposite sides of t-he common axis of the shafts 2 and 17. A crank pin 4 is normal to and connects the faces of the offset parts 2 and 15 and on the crank pin 4 is journaled the bearing hub 5 of a connecting rod 6. A pin orfroller 7 extends upward from the opposite end of the rod 6 through a slot 24 in the hed plate 20. The upper end of the roller'or pin 7 engages a recess 8 in the carriage 1. The recess 8 is sufficiently long to accommodate the movement of the pin 7 lin the direction of the recess, this motion of the pin 7 being due to the rotation of the end of the rod 6 about the common axis of the shafts 2 and 17. The pin pin 7 extends through an arcuate slot 24 formed in the bed plate 20.
When the hand wheel 3 is rotated, the end 5 of the connecting rod 6, in addition to its rotative movementaround the axis of the shaft 2 or 17, is constrained to follow the inclination of the faces on the offset parts 2, and lsince the rod is at all times held parallel with the offset parts 2 and 15. Considering Fig. 1, it will be seen that when the shaft 2 is given another half revolution, the offset parts 2 and 15 will be inclined so as to direct the rod 6 toward the other end of the slot. Revolving the hand wheel 3 therefore causes the carriage 1 to be reciprocated back andv forth past the edge of the slicing knife 12. I
Although I have illustrated a specific embodiment of myinvention, I donot wish to be limited to the particular details shown. An effect similar to that obtained in the illustrated apparatus may be attained by securing on the shaft an angular disc co-operating with a lug or roller on the carriageor 'by mounting upon the shaft a drum which is provided with a helical groove or rib which, however, is closed in itself and which coopera-tes with la pin or'groove respectively onthe carriage. f
I claim 1. In combination with a slicing machine having a slicing knife and acarriage, means for moving said carriage past the edge of said knife, said means comprising a driving shaft, an element angularly disposed with respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, and a single mea-ns having operative engagement with said carriage and angularly disposed element to move said carriage past saidknife when said shaft is rotated.

In combination with a slicing machlne Vhaving a slicing knife and a carriage, means for moving said carriage past the edge of said knife, said means comprising a driving shaft, an element angularly disposed With respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, and a single elementconnecting said carriage and angularly disposed element to move said carriage past said knife when said shaft is rotated, said last-mentioned means including a pin slidable in a recess in said carriage.

In combination with a slicing machine having a slicing knife and a carriage, means for moving said carriage past the edge of saidkknife, said means comprising a driving shaft, an element angularly disposed with respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, and means connecting said carriage and angularly disposed element to move said carriage past said knife when said shaft is rotated, said last-mentioned means including a connecting rod held parallel With said angularly disposed element and having its ends operatively engaging said element and carriage.
4. In combination With a slicing machine having a slicing knife and a carriage, means for moving said carriage past the edge of said knife, saidmeans comprising a driving shaft, an'element angularly disposed with respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, and means connecting said carriage and angu# larly disposed element to move said carriage past said knife When said shaft is rotated, said last-mentioned means including a connecting rod held parallel With said angularly disposed element during' rotation of said shaft, one end of said rod being formed to engage said element and the other end having a part engaging a recess in said carriage.
5. In combination with a slicingl machine having a slicing knife and a carriage,'means for moving saidcarriage. plast the edge of said knife, said means comprising a driving shaft, an element angularly disposed With respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, a pin extending substantially normal from said element, a connecting rod journaled at one end on said pin and having a connection at its other end with said carriage.

In combination With a slicing machine having a slicingl knife and a carriage, means for moving said carriage past the edge of said knife, said means comprising a driving shaft, an element angularly disposed .Withf respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, a slidablywand rotatably` mounted second shaft alined With said first, shaft, an element angularly disposed with respect to said second shaft and rotatable thereby, and a connecting rod having one end positioned between said elements and the other end operatively connected With said carriage.
7. combination AWith a slicing machine having a slicing knife and a carriage, means for reciprocating said carriage past the edge of said knife, said means comprising a driving shaft having an offset portion angularly disposed with respect to said shaft, a slidably and rotatably mounted second shaft alined With said first shaft, said second shaft having an offset portion parallel With the offset portion on said driving shaft, a crank pin connecting said odset portion, and a connecting rod journaled at one end of said pin and having a part on its other end engaged in an elongated recess in said carriage.
8. In combination With a slicing machine havinga slicing knife and a carriage, means for moving said carriage past the edge of said knife, said means comprising. a driving shaft, an element angularly disposed with respect to said shaft and rotatable thereby, means connecting said carriage and angularly disposed element to move said carriage past said knife when said shaft is rotated,` a chain for rotatingsaid knife, and a ratchet extending from said carriage and operatively engaging said chain when saidcarriage is moved toward said knife.
A 9. In a slicing machine, the combination with a base, of a carriagemovably supported on said base, a knife rotatably supportedlby said base, and means operative during only a portion of the travel of said carriage to actuate said slicing machine knife.
10. In a slicing` machine, the combination with aframe, a knife rotatably'mounted on said frame, a carriage adapted to be recipe rocate'd past said knife, and means on said carriage adapted toy engage means on the frame to rotate said knife While said carriage is moving in one direction only.`
11. In a slicing machine, the combination with a base member, a knife rotatably supported on said base member, a driving element operatively connected to said knife to rotate the same, and means on 'said carriage adapted to engage said driving means While the carriage is moving in one direction only.
12. A device as claimed in claim l1 in Which the driving means for the knife comprises a chain mounted on suitable sprockets on the frame and slicing knife, and the means on the carriage comprises a ApaWl which is adapted Vto engage the chain and thereby move said chain as the carriage is moved in one direction, said pawl being free ,to ride over said chain `Without actuating the same as the carriage movesin the opposite direction.
13. A slicing machine comprising a base member and a Work supporting table movably supported there-on, a crank shaft having an angularly offset crank pin mounted on said base member, and a connecting rodrotatably mounted on said crank pin and operatively connected to said table so that rotationV of the crank causes reciprocation of said table.
14. In a slicing machine, the combination with a base member, a slicing knife rotatably mounted thereon, a carriage mounted to re'- ciprocate past said slicing knife, a crank shaft having an angularly offset crank pin mounted on said base member, a connecting rod operatively connected to the crank pin and to the carriage so that rotation of the rcrank shaft causes the table to reciprocate,
and an arcuate slot in said base member, a portion of the operative connection between said connecting rod and said table extending through said arcuate slot.
15. A device as claimed in claim 14 in which the operative connection between the connecting rod and the table comprises a pin mounted on said connecting rod and adapted to extend into a slot in said carriage, said pin also extending through said arcuate slot in the base member.
