Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
AMOS WHITTEMORE, OF OAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-RAILWAY TURN-OUTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,603, dated May 16, 1876; application filed November 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be itv known that I-,-AMos WHITTEMORE, of Cambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse-Oar- Rail Switch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure-1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my switch, and Figs. ,2 and3 transverse sectional views of the rail thereof.
This invention has relation to horse-car railroads; and the nature of my invention consists in a novel arrangement of guard-flanges with relation to sections of the track-rails where there are sidings or turn-outs from the main rails, as will be hereinafter explained.
It is a very common occurrence for streetcars to leave the track in switching from a main track to a side track, and vice versa,
and the object of my invention is to obviate this source of trouble.
In the annexed drawing, A A designate the straight main-track rails, and B B designate the turnout or siding rails branching off from the main-track rails. The sections between the main rails and the turn-out rails have flanges G 0 formed on them, which are on the outside of, and extend above, the rollingsurt'aces of their respective rail-sections. The guard-flange G is about the center of the main turn-out rail, and extends along the entire distance where the wheels are liable to jump the rail while the driver is turning his car from the main track to the side or branch track. Should there be a tendency at such point for the wheels to jump the track the outside of the right-hand wheels will strike the guard-flange O and'prevent displacement of the car. The guard-flange G on the maintrack. rail is so arranged with relation to the AMOS WHITTEMORE.
