A. COPPOLA Sept. 16, 1930.

A TTOR Em Patented Sept. 16, 1930 PATENT OFFICE AUGUST COPPOLA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHADE ROLLER,
Application filed July 5,
This invention relates to shade rollers.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall be cheap to manufacture, comprise few and simple parts, permit quick assembly and shall yet be rugged in construction, and efiicient and practical to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation with parts broken away, of a roller shade embodying the invention; 1 I
Fig. 2 is an end View of the roller with parts broken away to show the interior con struction;
Fig. 8 is a partial cross-sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a front view of a blank from which one of the parts is formed;
Fig. 5 is a front View of the part formed from the blank shown in F ig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the pawl assembly; and
Fig. 7 is a View of the pawl housing taken from the interior of the roller.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 designates the shade roller embodying the invention which is here seen to comprise a tubular roller 11 preferably made of wood, mounting a curtain roll 12. Said roller is formed with a closed end 13 and an open end 14 and is provided with means at both ends thereof for mounting the shade on a window frame (not shown). At the closed end 13, the mounting means comprises a cap member 15 snugly fitted over said end portion 13 and comprising an end wall 16 and a cylindrt cal portion 17. Said end wall 16 is apertured centrally thereof to receive a pin 18 driven into said end portion 13 of the roller. Said pin 18 is preferably provided with a shoul 1925. Serial No. 290,33
der flange 19 adjacent the outer end thereof, abutting said end wall 16. The cap member 15 is preferably formed of stamped sheet metal and the end wall 16 thereof may be formed with prongs 2O punched into said end wall 13 to more firmly secure said cap to said roller. T 1e outer end portion 21 of said pin 18 is adapted to be inserted in an ordinary bearing bracket in the window frame for mounting the roller, as is well known in the art. Where the frame is somewhat wider than the roller, the pin 18 may be withdrawn a short distance as required to lengthen the shade. It will be noted that when the pin is thus pulled, the shoulder 19 of said pin is necessarily removed from abutting relation with the cap member 15. In such position the pron s 20 prevent the cap member from becoming loose on the roller 11.
The means for mounting the roller 11 at the open end 1 1, comprises a cap member 25 fitted over said open end. Said cap member 25 being formed with a cylindrical portion 26 and an eno wall 27, spaced from the open end of the roller. The cylindrical portions 26 may be formed with an inwardly pressed outer edge portion 28 for firmly securing said cap to the roller 11.
A stamped, cup-shaped member 29 may be housed. in the cap member 25 between the spaced walls 26 and 14-. bald member 29 comprises a cylindrical portion 30 contacting the inner surface of wall 2'? of said cap 25, and an end wall 31 adjacent the roller end 14. Said end wall 31 may be punched to provide diametrically spaced prongs 32 which are forced into the end portion 14 of the roller 11 to fix said member 29 thereto. The end wall 31 may be further stamped to provide diametrically spacer. strap portions 33 abutting said end portion for a purpose hereinafter appearing, also stamped to provide a central bearing portion A spindle 35 extends within the roller and is provided with a metal band secured thereto at one end thereof, the band 36 having a reduced portion 36 journaled in bearing 84. A. flat crossshaped member complementary to pin 18, may be secured to said spindle 85, one end 38 of said member 3? being driven into the left end of the spindle (as seen in Fig. 3)
and secured thereto by a pin 39. Said member 37, it will be noted, extends thru an enlarged opening 40 in the end wall 26 of cap 25 and thru a-suitable opening in the metallic band 36, and is provided with aligned proj ections 41 and a tongue or trunnion 42 which is engageable in the slot of an ordinary shade roller fixture to non-rotatably support said spindle 35.
The customary coil retrieving spring 43 surrounds the spindle andis secured thereto at one end 44 preferably by inserting the outer convolution 45 of said springin a slit 46 cut in said end 44, The opposite end of the spring 43 is secured to the cup member 31, preferablyby passing the outer convolution 47 thereof thru the opening formed by the strap member .33.
It will now be apparent that when the between the projections 41 and the band 86. Said plate 51 is provided with diametrically spaced peripheral angular notches 52, each notch presenting a ramp portion 53 and an abutment wall 54. Said notches 52 are adapted to receive dogs or pawls 55 pivotally mounted, as hereinafter described, on a stamped plate 56 positioned within cup member 29 and adjacentend wall 26 of cap member 25. ,Said plate 56 may be formedfrom theblank shown in Fig. 4 which is seen to comprise four equally spaced extensions 57 and four projections 58, alternately spaced between said extensions 57. Said plate "56 is further provided with an enlarged opening 59 thru which the member37 may extend.
Theprojections 58 are bent at rightangles to the plate 56, as seen in Fig. 5', and are formed with reduced end portions 59 received in suitable openings 60 formed in wall 31 of member 29. r The projections 58 thus comprise shafts extending between plate 56 and wall 31 and supported by the latter. Said shafts 58 "further provide means for securing said plate 56 against rotation relatively. tosaid member '29. Four dogs 55 are provided and each is formed with an opening 61 at one end thereof for mounting said dogs on said shafts 58. It will now be apparent that by lowering the shade the roller may be rotated in a counterclockwise direction looking at Fig.2: During this movement the dogs simply slide over ramps 53. Upon release of the curtain the tensioned spring will tend to rotate the roller in an opposite direction. 7 However, a dog 55 will engage stops 54 to prevent the shade from rewinding. When, however, the curtain is given a sudden jerk down, the roller rotates quickly and the dogs fly out radially due to centrifugal force. Sudden release of the curtain will now permit rewinding of the curtain since the dogs are out of engagement with the notches 52. During the rewinding of the curtain, centrifugal force due to rotation will continue to hold the dogs out of conj tact with stops 54. j
The parts comprising the mounting and brake structure are made of metal stampings which may readily be assembled in'a manner obvious from'the above description. 7 v o It will thus be seen that there isprovided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use. 7 j v r As various possibleeinbodiments might be made of the above invention, and as var ous changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrae tive and not in a limiting sense.
