Description
w. RAY. TOOLS FOR BENDING HORSESH'OES.
Patented May 16. 1876'.
ATTORNEYS. I
UNITE STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM- BAY, OF POPLAR POST, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOLS FOR BENDING HORSESHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,558, dated May 16, 1876; application filed i February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM RAY; of Poplar Post, in thecounty of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool for Straightening and Bending Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification:
- Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved tool, shown in position for straightening a shoe. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same, shown in position for bending a shoe.'
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved tool for straightening and bending horseshoes after they have been nailed on, and only upon one side, as the condition of the foot may require.
The invention consistsof the two handles pivoted to each other, the long jaw curved outward, and provided with an arm upon its inner or convex side, and the short jaw curved inward, constructed and arranged as hereinafter fully described.
j A and B are. the two handles ofthe tool, which are pivoted together in a manner similar to a pair of pinchers. Upon the forward end of the handle A is formed a long jaw, O,
which is curved outward, and its end is notched to cause it to take a firmer hold upon the edge of the shoe. Upon the middle part of the inner or convex side of the jaw G is formed a short arm, D, projecting at right angles, or nearly at right angles, with the said jaw 0. Upon the forward end of the other handle, B, is formed a short jaw, E,which is curved inward, and has teeth formed upon both its inner and outer sides, to cause it to' take a firmer hold upon the end or heel of the shoe.
In using the tool for straightening or spreading a shoe the tool is placed between the ends of the shoe, with the end of the longjaw G resting against the inner edge of the shoe between the first and second nails, or thereabout, and the short jaw E, resting against the inner corner of the end of the shoe, as shown in'Fig. 1. Then, by drawing the handles A B apart, the shoe will be straightened or spread.
To bend the-shoe the long jaw G is placed within the shoe, with the end of the arm D resting against the arm of the. shoe to be drawn inward or bent, and with the short jaw E resting against the outer corner of'the heel of the said arm of the shoe. Then, byanoving the handles toward the heel of the other arm of the shoe, the said shoe will be bent or contracted.
By this instrument horses feet that have become crooked or contracted upon one side, and remain natural upon the other, .can be straightened, and after the operation has been repeated a few times the feet become round and natural.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved tool consisting of the two handles AB, pivoted to each other, the long jaw U curved outward, and provided with an arm, D, upon its inner or convex side, and the short jaw E, curved inward, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
. WILLIAM RAY. Witnesses:
J OHN FORREST, Mrs. MARY WoosTER.
