Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
JAMES J. DUNN, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASPERSORIUMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,484, dated May 16, 1876 application filed April 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1',- JAMES J. DUNN,Of
. Meadville, county of Crawford, and State of proved aspersorium, or holy-water sprinkler,
for Catholic churches; and Fig. 2, a top view of the perforated head of the sprinkler.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved asper- SOI'lllII], or sprinkler for holy water in Catholic churches, which may also be applied to bottles containing holy water. The sprinkler is always ready for use during service, and does not require a separate vessel containing the holy water, and a special attendant for the same. It is cheap and handy, and gives a copious supply whenever required.
The invention consists of a reservoir, which is attached to the handle of the aspersorium,
and provided with a neck, tube, and perforatedhead, for sprinkling the water.
In the drawing, A represents a vessel or reservoir, of glass, metal, or other material, and preferably of elongated bulb shape. It is made of a size to contain a sufficient quantity It is applied, by a suitable cap or ferrule at the lever end, to the handle, and hung up by a suspension-ring at the end when not in use. The water-reservoir A is-provided at the other end with a perforated ball-shaped head, B, that is screwed, by the threaded end of its neck 0, into the mouth of the reservoir. The neck 0 communicates,
by a small orifice or a perforated diaphragm, a, with the interior of the head,'and conveys the water from the reservoir to the same. A perforated division-plate, B, of the head and a sponge placed in front of the dividing-plate serve to regulate'and adjust the supply of water, so as to furnish a copious supply without allowing the escape of too great a quantity at the time. The sponge also serves to take up any water that escapes to the head after the shaking of the aspersorium.
The neck is tightly secured by a cork, rubber, or other gasket into the receptacle, to prevent leakage.
The device forms a handy, cheap, and convenient sprinkler for the service, and for holywater bottles in use among Catholics.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of hollow front perforated bulb B, having sponge-chamber and tubular neck, with a reservoir, tapered and fitting at the small end over the said neck, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
JAMES JOSEPH DUNN.
