Description

zontal axis disposed at right angles to the Patented Aug. 26, 1930 UNITED STATES THOMAS J. BRIMER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
OF AMERICA, on cLEvELAND' orrIo, Ayconrona rrolv remain Goo 'HiIMon cof i o x H ES.
Application filed July 12,
In the vending of commodities throughout a community from an automobile or similar vehicle, it is highly desirable tohave some sort of a signal to announce the approach of the same.
The object of my invention, there-fore, has been to devise a novel mechanism which may be associated with the vehicle to announce its presence in the vicinity.
To be more specific, I provide chimemeans mounted upon a novel hanger which in turn is suspended from the body of the vehicle. The hanger issuspended in such a manner that it is rockedas the vehicle encounters rough spots in the road or by a change in acceleration of the vehicle and also I'provide a pull arm whereby the hanger may be manually operable. I
The hanger member preferably comprises a horizontal bar and hanger members upturned at the ends thereof and which are provided with apertures therethrough. The suspension means is preferably secured to the body of the vehicle and is formed with laterally extending, portions which pass through the openings in thehangers so that the device is adapted to rock about a horipathof travel of the vehicle. I
Various other and more detailed objects will appear as the description of the inven tion proceeds.
For a full and more complete understanding of the invention, reference maybe had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in whi'ch I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a vehicle body having my novel device afiixed thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device. 1
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the same.
' Figure 4 is a detail view of the supporting member and clappers associated therewith.
Throughout the following description and accompanying drawings, like reference characters denote corresponding parts.
While a preferred, specific embodiment of the invention is herein set forth, it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the exact constructions illustrated and deof travelof the vehicle.
1929. ,Seria1;1 To.-37 7,879.
scribed because various. ,modificmtiohs of I these details maybe p rovided the invention intopractice withinjthe purview of theappended claim. 1 I z A vehicle body with which my novel device is associated is generally denotedat A. The device comprises a horizontal bar 1 having upturned end portions orhangers "2. The'hangers 2 are apertured at 3 for reasons to be'hereinafter set forth. Afplurality of bells {are secured to the hanger member by any suitable means such as the rivets 5. 'f In the preferred form,';the, bells 4' are each of a difi'erent size so as to give ofl .soundsof different pitches." Inthe present instance Ihave shown four bells secured to the horizontal bar"1 Each bell is'provided with three clappers. The clappers comprise Weights 6 freely suspended by means of wires 7. The three wires for each bell are freely fastened to a supporting member 8 which is secured to the corresponding bell and horizontal bar by the rivet 5 which also secures the bell to the bar. I
The vehicle body A is provided with suspension means which in the present embodiment include a vertical screw threaded portion 9 and a lateral outstanding portion 10 which is disposed in a horizontal plane, the
lateral portions .10 passing through the apermeans.
I preferto locate my device so that the horizontal bar 1 is at rightangles to the path It can thus be readily seen that as the vehicle travels over the road the device will be rocked by changes in motion of thevehicle or by the vehicle passing over uneven spots in the road. For manual control of the device I providea pull arm 11 secured to the bar 1 by means of a rivet 12. The pull arm is of angular formation, one part being disposed parallel to the road and the other part being perpendicular thereto. At the end of the perpendicular part of the pull arm there is a hole 13 for receiving a flexible wire 14 which in turn passes through a hole 15 in the body of the vehicle.
The free end of the flexible wire 14 is protures 3 of the hangers 2 so that the device as V a whole may be rockedabout the suspension Jon I vided with a knob 16 to facilitate the operation thereof. A pulley 17 may also be secured to the body of the vehicle and the fiexible wire 14 threaded thereover.
u 5 Because of the novel mounting of my device as has been hereinbefore pointed out, the chimes comprising the bells and clappers will ring under the slightest movement ofthe vehicle'and by means of the pull arm and parts associated therewith the chimes may be manually operated either while the vehicle is moving or when it is standing still. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ,Patentof the'United States, is
In a vehicle from which edibles are vended, 'means for audibly attracting the attention of the public, said means comprising a bar having a body and ends bent at right angles to 2 "the body, said ends havingopemngs, pivot elements'disposed in said openings and having means for attachment to a vehicle, whereby said bar may be pivotally suspended, a plurality of spaced chime members, a plurality of spaced hammers pivotally attached to each chimemember, and means common to each chime member and its hammers for fixedly securing them to said body, whereby any movement of said body about said pivots ree sults in operation of said chimes. I
"In testimonywhereof I aflix my signature. o THOMAS J. BRIMER.
