PATIENT OFFICE.
EUGENE A. ELY, OF MADISON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM F. ELY, OE SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m HAMMERIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17 73386, dated May 16, 1876; application filed December 7, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE A. ELY, of Madison, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Improvement in Hammers, of which the follow-' enlarged scale, of one of the claws, showing the construction of the gouge-point.
The claws on hammers and other tools are a common device, but, so far as I know, they can be used only when the head of a nail appears above the surface. To remedy this defeet is the object of iny invention and to this end I make the face A of the claws cylindrical, or with an oblique angle from the crease, insteadofflat, like those in common use.
The points B of the claws are made in the shape of a gouge, and are made sharp, so that they will readily cut away the wood on either side of a nail, and allow the claws to catch under the head of it, no matter it at some distance below the surface.
The inner edges 0 of the face of the claws are made sharp, so that, if a nail is without a head, these sharp edges will cut into the sides of the nail and draw it the same as though it had a head.
These claws are readily connected with a hammer in the place of the ordinary claws, but they are not confined to this relation, for they may be variously used, as onthe end of a bar or lever, the same principles being preserved of the cylindrical face, the gouge-points, and cutting or sharp inside edges of theclaws.
With this tool any board or cover of a box may be readily removed with no other help, and the cover be preserved, without splitting, for further use. v
A hammer,- having claws terminating in gouge-points, substantially as and forthe purpose specified.
EUGENE A. ELY.
