UNITED STATES PATENT .OEEIoE.
WILL-IA E. BEASLEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT I N FASTENINGS- FOR CAR-DOORS, &c.
Specification forming part'of Letters Patent No. 177,368, dated May 16,1876; application filed April 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BEASLEY of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain improvements in means for securing the entrance or doors of bonded, postal, or other cars, or other conveyances, or places, where it is desired to prevent the undetected tampering with of the staple or bolt to which the lock is applied, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is specially designed to be used in connection with a seal or other safety or detective lock, and, when so employed, affords a sure protection vagainst the unnoticed tampering with of the locking devices of the car, &c., by dishonest attendants or others.
ltwill be seen from the following that the parts enteringinto the invention cannot be altered in their respective relations in a manner admitting of the opening of the entrance to the car, &c., without detection being inevitable, it being impossible to readjust said parts in their original relation from the exterior of the car.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a sectional plan of a portion of the side of a car having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through line w yof Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in both views.
A is the outer, and A the inner, plate of the car, and B the door thereof, sliding on rollers, or in some usual way, between the plates A A. O is a pipe, secured in some suitable manner to theinside of the car, and totally concealed, and further held at its inner end by the shield a, made of plate-iron, and fastened by rivets or other means to the inside of the car. The end of the pipe 0 joining the plate A is open, the plate being perforated at the place of connection, as also are the door B and outer plate A, as shown.
A staple is represented by b fitting within the pipe 0, of such length that when pushed back into the pipe the outer end of the staple will rest sufficiently back in the opening 0 in the plate A as to admit of the passage past it of the door B. A rod, d, prevents the extracting 'ot' the staple, the rod passing vertically the hasp or other attaching part of the lock secured thereto.
It will be seen that if the lock is detective in its-character, this invention prevents the least attempt to open the car without detection which could be perpetrated. If the staple were sawed oii' the replacement of another would be practically impossible.
I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I. The sliding staple b, concealed and se cured within the car, in combination with the perforated door and body ot' the car, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the pipe 0, secured within the car, staple 1), rod 01, perforated plates A A of the car, and sliding door B, having the opening 6, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the shield a, secured to and within the car, and concealing and assisting in the securing ot' the pipe 0, withthe said pipe, substantially as herein specified.
4. The rod d, secured to the inside .of the car, in combination with the pipe 0, the rod passing through the pipe, as specified, for the purpose designated.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 30th day of January, in the year of our Lord 1875.
WILLIAM F. BEASLEY.
