Description

Aug. 19, 1930. D. BROWN 1,773,661
BEARING BOX Filed Sept. 50, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENTOR J v -W 2 BY my BEARING BOX Filed Sept. 50, 1929 2 Sheets-sheaf 2 Janzk/KZyae Brawl? INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 19, 1930 UNITED stares DANIEL CLYDE BROWN, OF WEST PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA BEARING BOX Application filed September 30, 1929. 7 Serial No. 396,215.
This invention relates to improvements in bearing boxes for railway cars and has as one of its objects-to provide a bearing box to which access may be had with convenience, in replacing the roller bearings or the packing, or in making any other repairs.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bearing box, the cap of which is readily removable so that access may be had to the interior of the box proper and likewise. to the interior of the cap without any need for removing the Wheel from the axle or dis: placing or removing the body of the box.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the cap of the box may be separably connected with the body of the box and, when the parts are assembled, be held in place without the employment of any bolts or other fastening means, which would be required to be removed.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying draw-f ings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which v Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the bearing box embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the box taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view 0 I the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a Vertical longitudinal sectional View thru a modifiedform of box'designed primarily for use on mining cars.
In the drawings and referring more particularly to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the body of the box is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and is, as usual, of cast iron, being closed at its inner end, which is presented toward the side of the respective car wheel, which is indicated by the numeral 2, and being provided at its closed end with an opening 3 of a diameter equal to that of the axle cylindrical in form. At its said open end the box is formed with a semi-angular flange 4: which has a length equal to one half the circumference of the open end' of thebox,
and this flange is formed in its inner surface with a groove 5 Wl1lCl1 extendsjfro'm end to end thereof. The bearings for the axle are indicated in general by the numeral 6 and are, as usual, mounted in the body 1 of the box. The cap of the box is indicated in general by, the numeral 7 and the same is likewise of cast iron and includes a closed outer end '8 and a circumferential wall 9, and at one point inthe circumference of the cap,
the same is formed with an enlargement or boss 10, provided with an opening 11 which extends atan angle to the axis of the cap and, inasmuch as this opening has its outer end presented upwardly and the opening is located above the axle and midway between the ends of the flange 4, when the cap is properly applied, it constitutes an opening thru which lubricant can be introduced into the box.
The cap is fu'rther formed with a circumferent al flange 12, which is of such dlameter as to seat for one half its circumference 1n the groove 5 when the head is assembled with the body of the box, a packing strip 13 being preferably disposed within the bottomv of the groove 5, so as to prevent the escape of lubricant from the box. It will not be evident that, so'long as the flange 12, which is of a length equal to the length of the groove 5,
is seated in'the groove, there can be no separation of the head from the body and therefore the use'of bolts or other fastening means is avoided. When it is desired to gain access to the interior of the box or to the interior of the cap 7, the cap is rotated one half a revolution, thus disengaging the flange 12 from the groove 5 whereupon the cap may be readily lifted out of end of the body.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing is substantially the same as that shown in the other figures, and parts corresponding shown in place closing the open Figures 1, 2 and 3, are indicated by like reference numerals, primed. In this modified form, which is as above stated, adapted for use on mining cars, the bearing box may be 5 mounted at the inner side of the car wheel instead of on an extension of the wheel axle as in the previously described embodiment, and the construction of this box is identical with that of the box of the previously described embodiment except for its reverse disposal as stated -abov e,and, likewise the provision within the cap 4:,of a packing ring 14: and which is annular in form and disposed against, the shoulder, 15, which is pro- 15 vided by forming an opening 16 in the otherwise closed end of the cap to accommodate the car axle, the interior diameter of the packing ring being such as to adapt the ring to it substantially snugly about the axle. 2o This-prevents discharge of lubricant at this oint.
What I claim is 1. A bearing box comprising a body for housing the axle end and the bearing therefor, the body being open at one end and provided at its said end with a flange extending about the lower portion of the said end, and a cap closing said end of the body and having an outstanding flange rotatably [itting and interlocking with the first mentioned flange, the flange upon the cap being substantially of the same length as the flange upon the body, the cap being provided, in its side opposite its side at which the flange extends, with a lubricant receiving opening.
2. A bearing box comprising a body for housing the axle end and the bearing therefor, the body being open at one end and pro-- vided at its said end with a flange extending 40 about the lower portion of the said end, a cap closing said end of the body and having an outstanding flange rotatably fitting and ini terlocking with the first mentioned flange, the flange upon the cap being substantially of the same length as the flange upon the body,
. the cap being provided, in its side opposite its side at which the flange extends, with a lubricant receiving opening, and a packing strip arranged within the bottom of saidgroove and engaged by the periphery of the flange upon the cover.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signa-,
ture.
