SOUN DING DEVICE Application filed October 23, 1928. Serial No. 314,353.
view as the nature of the invention will be better understood the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved sounding device. v
Figure 2 is a view mainly in side elevation, and partially in cross section.
Figure 3 is a detail horizontal section taken substantially upon the line 3'-3 of Figure 1 and looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a similar View taken substantially on the lineH of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective of one of the finger operating cams. Now having particular reference to the drawings, my novel invention consists of a backing plate or board 5 associated with the upper end of which is a suitable casing 6. Arranged longitudinally within this casing is a shaft 7 equipped at predetermined spaced points with suitable cams 8. One end of the shaft 7 is equipped with a crank handle 9 whereby to facilitate the rapid rotation of.
said shaft. Beneath this shaft casing 6 the front surface of the backing board5 is equipped with suitable supporting means 10 while arranged upon the forward ends therescope of the appended claim.
of is a board 11, the outer face of which is provided with a pad 12 of predetermined thickness of material and softness. The shaft housing 6 is open for the greater portion of its bottom'area and pivoted to the housing directly beneath the shaftare depending striker fingers 13 that project upwardly into the housing and terminate within the surface of the respective cams so that when the cams rotate, the inner ends of these 6 fingers will be engaged to cause the outward movement of the lower ends thereof with respec-t to the pad 12. Between each finger 13 and the backing plate of the device are retractile coil springs 14 for the purpose of normally maintaining the lower fiat ends of the fingers for engagement with the pad 12,
and the upper ends thereof in engagement 7 7 with said cams 8. Obviously therefore the rotation of the shaft 7 will cause the rotation of said cams andby reason of the stag- 'gered relation of the projections of the'cams with respect to each other, the fingers will be caused to alternately strike the pad 12 for simulating the sound of a rifle, a rapid fire 7o gun or the hoof beats of animals.
In view of the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it will be apparent that I have provided a novel, simple and highly useful sounding device that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated.
Even, though I have herein shown and de-' scribed the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be understood that some-changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and Having thus described the invention, what I I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent is: V
A sound producing device comprising a base, a hollow casing'supported on one end of the base, a shaft extending through the casing and journalled through the opposed Q) (ill walls thereof, said shaft having a, crank handle coupled to one end of the shaft, a plurality ofcams secured to the shaft at spaced points along its axis, said casing having an peningjn one Wall, a plurality of fiat striking fingers pivoted intermediate their ends to the casing and having one end of each finger extending through the opening and terminating in the path of the cams, a strik-' ing pad supported in spaced relation to the other end of the base adjacent the free ends of the striking fingers and springs secured to the base and the fingers to normally urge the fingers to contact with the base. V In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ARTHUR W. NICHOLS.
