' This invention relates to an improved banding machine and is herein shown as embodied in a machine for automatically applying an enclosing band or label to'an article or bundle of articles.
Considerable diificulty has been encountered in the past in insuring effective operation of automatic wrapping or labeling machines on account of faulty adhesion of the.
bands or labels and on accountof irregularity in the supplying of the labelsto the label applying or wrapping mechanism.
It is, accordingly, an object of the invention to provide im roved mechanism for ap,
'15 plying bands or la els, to articles or bundles of articles, such for example as pairsof shoe,
laces, and in accordance with one feature of the invention the illustrated banding machine is constructed and arranged to fold a label about a bundle and fasten it securely by the application of pressure and heat simultane ouslyxto the folded ends of the label one of which is coated with a gum of such a" nature that it is rendered tacky when heated.
To this end, the folding means of the illustrated machine comprises a jaw containing a heating unit toward which the bundle toibe banded is positivel forced and against which the gummed end 0 the label is pressed, there- I 3 by insuring the adhesion of the gummed end of the label to the other end thereof.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the illustrated banding machineis providing with an improved label magazine for supplying labels one by one to the folding means which magazine is constructed and arranged to maintain a supply ofv labels ,at its delivery end, the stack of labels being fed to bring another label to the end of the magazine when ever the endmost label-is removed.
When the magazine is brought into engagement with the wrapping mechanism it is held resiliently in juxtaposition to a vacu'um plate which is adapted to retain thereon the endmost label in the magazine as it isretracted from the wrapping device.
' In another aspect-the invention includes an oscillating bundle'support arranged intermittently to move a bundle or article to be banded into engagement with the label on the vacuum plate which is ieldingly received in a recess in the support or the banding device. In order partially to encircle the bundle with. the label, the bundle support is moved to carry the bundle within the above-mentioned recess, causing the label to be folded about three sidesof the bundle. .At the completion ofthe wrapping operation as above described the bundle support is operated to withdraw the banded bundle from the recess in these wrapping device. Secured to tile shaft 7 4 and extending 'rearwardly therefrom within thecasing 11 is, a lever 77 and to the inner end of this lever is pivotally attached the upper end of a cam rod 78. This cam rod 78 passesthrough a bearing member 79 in the casing 11 and has rotatably mounted at its lowerend a "cam follower 80 which engages with a cam 81 secured to the shaft 13.
In the operation of the machine the magazine casing 221s first filled with gummed la bels and heat is supplied tovthe heating element 7 2 from any suitable source. the continued rotation of the shaft 13 will cause the cam 49 to engage with the cam roller 48 and the pairsofjaws 45 and 46 will be moved upwardly, moving the article or bundle of articles upwardly into engagement with the label 30 (Fig. 4) held on the bottom of the perforated plate 62. Continued upward movement of the jaws 4 5 and 46 will carry the bundle into the transverse re- 7 6 cess 51, compressing the springs 69 and cans-- its rotation, the cam 81 will cause anoscillating movement of the shaft 74, first in a clockwise direction. as viewed in. Fig. 1, whereupon the camarm 76 will engage with the'pin 69, on the lever 66 and the transverse jaw member 68 carried thereby will engage with a free ungummed end of the label 30. and move the same. acrossthe lower faee of .the article or bundle of articles. Upon the opposite movement of the shaft 74, the arms 7 5' and 76 will rotate to the right as shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the arm will engage the rod 52 and the arm 76 will engage the camface 730 of the arm 70. k
