SMITH, OF DOUGLASTON, NEWvYORK, ASSIGNOR T0y RAYMOND CONCRETE PILE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF'NEW JERSEY COLLAPSIBLE CORE FOR CONCRETE PILES Application led February 27,1926. Serial No. k91,024.
' y' This shaftis provided with a plurality of spaced collars, in the shape of frustums of cones, which cooperate with corresponding surfaces attached to the sectional casing forming the outer surface of the core.. The outer casing is made in sections, each section being connected to the central shaft by short links, for apurpose to be described.
The central shaft is provided at its upper end with a driving head and with devices to ycontrol the collapsing of the core after the driving is finished. a
The core is expanded by raising it into vertical position and landing it on a timber, the
weight of the parts causing the cone shaped collars on the central shaft to actV upon the cooperating surfaces ofthe outer core'sections to `expand them to full diameter. The core is held in expanded position by means of locking dogs which hold the core sections up to the head. The shell is put on afterthe core is expanded, and is then driven to position.
.After completion of the driving operation the core is collapsed by mechanism in the head, actuated through a false driving head, which is in turn actuated by the hoisting effort applied to withdraw the core from the driven shell.
The initial movement of the false head serves to actuate a leversystem which forces a movement of the central shaft easily Withdrawn from the shell bythe short links connecting it tothe central shaft.
Sometimes, during the driving operatlon,
vthe contacting surfaces of the .central'shaft and outer casing become so tightlywedged Y v indersf24, each closed on top with a screw together that it is very diiiicult to draw them hammer. ,manufactura easy to keep 1n working order,

apart, and the object of the present invention Ais to provide improved means to Vbring about such movement of central shaft and outer casing relatively to each other as is necessary in order to collapse the core after driving.
In some prior designs the collapsing mechanism comprises a lever ysystem actuated by the false head when force is applied, while in other designs force is supplied bythe driving hammer or jack.
My present invention discloses an improved device, hydraulically operated, and entirely independent of hoisting tackle or driving Itis simple in design, cheap to and may be operated manually or by power.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 shows an interior view of a complete core embodying my device, with outer casing expanded.
Fig. 2 shows an interior view of a complete i Y core embodying'my device, with outer casing collapsed, and with hydraulic pump attached.
Fig. 3 is .a cross section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is, an interior view of a complete core showing a modified form of my device, the core being expanded ready for driving.
Fig. 5 shows the samemechanism as Fig. 4 with core collapsedand with pump attached.
Fig. 6 is a section on line 6 6 of Fig. v5.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 Aand 3, the pile core is formed witha central member in the form of a shaft 10, either solid or hollow and provided at intervalsalong its length with collars 12 having outer surfaces in the shape of frustums of cones, and arranged to contact Iwith cooperatingr surfaces formed on members 14 rattached to the outer casing. The casing is shown as made in three sections 16 but may be of any desired number, two or more. The central shaftand outer casing sections are inter-connected by links 18 which serve, after `collapsing has been effected, to withdraw the casing with the shaft.
At its upper end shaft 10 is provided with a driving head 20, into which shaft 1Q is se- In the top of head20 are bored three cyl*-` bya lpassage 34 vand so pijpowei.

The top of c 1inder 78 is closed by plug 80. Plunger 6 is normally held at the top of cylinderv 78 by spring 82 surrounding stern 74.
Fig. 4 shows the core in expanded positien, 4ready for driving,-with headV 20 and casing sections v16 in Contact `at 46 and inembers 14 expanded by wedges 12. Plunger 76 is'atthe upper end or' cylinder 78, and the nose of the toggle is on or near the vertical center-line of 'head 20.
After the driving operation is finished and it is desired to Withdraw the core, oil is forced between plunger 76`and cap- 80 by ump 40, forcing pluri r 76 downward an V,driving the wedge 72 etwe'en the nose ends 70`o`f'the toggl'es, thus straightening the V`:5nd causing them to lift head ,20 relatively to casing 16, thereby causing' the collapse of the latter as described above.
