My invention relates to an improved mechanism for pasteurizing, holding, cooling, or otherwise treating liquids.
In Letters Patents, Nos. 924,233, granted to me June 8, 1909, 949,769, granted to me February 22, 1910, and 1,156,361, granted t0 me October 12, 1915, there are disclosed various constructions showing helical coils mounted on central rotating shafts, and disposed in cylinders, said Letters Patents showing various means for applying heating or cooling medium to said coils, and for rotating the same to produce the desired agitation. My present invention is designed as an improvement over these constructions, and said improvement is found essentially in disposing the double coil eccentrically within the container or cylinder, whereby the following advantages are obtained:
First, greater accessibility for cleaning purposes.
Secondly, greater operating etliciency.
rlhirdly, self-induced friction without the use of obstructive projections.
Fourthly, gentler action on the liquid treated.
Fifthly, greater ability to remove harmful gases by the coil action.
There is also an entire absence of sharp projections and corners, and the improved device is more cheaply constructed.

In the said drawings, referring more particularly to Figures 1 and 2, the reference numeral 1 denotes a suitable container mounted pn .supports 2, and having located centrally 1n its bottom a drain connection 3 provided with a valve 4. On the side of said container onel or more manholes 5 are located, of any suitable construction designed to withstand either pressure or vaccuum. One or more glass windows 6 also are provided, and may be disposed either in the side or in the top of the container. Said container is provided with a sealed top 7 fitted thereto, and eccentrically mounted on the latter is a combined gear mechanism and fluid conductor 8 especially adapted to'carry a rotatable helical coil 9 connected at its upper and lower ends to a tubular shaft l0 and eccentrically disposed in said container. Through a construction more fully explained inmyLettersPatentNo. 1,156,361, hereinbefore referred to, treating fluid may be circulated through separate ducts located in the shaft 10, connecting with parts registering with an inlet 11 and an outlet 12. Theapparatus is shown as driven by a pulley drive 13, but any other suitable form of power transmission may be employed. At 14 is shown an independent inlet used for filling the container or for applying pressure or vacuum thereto, as desired. At 15 is shown a safety connection, to which is secured a pressure gage 16 and a safety valve 17.
In operation, liquid to be treated is introduced into the container 1, either from the top at 14 or under pressure from the bottom at 3, and treating medium, either hot or cold, then is introduced through the inlet pipe 11, the same passing through an inner duct into tubular shaft 10 until it reaches the coil connection, where it is diverted either as a single flow downward through one set of the coils and upward through the other set, or direct to the bottom of both sets through pipe 10, and then upward through both sets of coils until it reaches the annular space 18 located between the inner and outer ducts in the shaft l0, or vice versa, the discharge being through the outlet 12. During this supply of treating fluid the double coil is rotated by the power transmitting mechanism 13, and this action is continued until the desired results upon the medium being treated are obtained.
In Figure 3 l have shown a( modiiied construction wherein the container 19 is of eccentric oblong shape with rounded corners, the double coil 20, similar to the coil 9 of Figure l, being disposed centrally therein, the contour of the container obtaining the desired. eccentric effect. The operation otherwise orn this device is the same as that described with respect to Figure l.
In Figure d l have shown still another modified form, the container 2l being circular, and being provided with a plurality of four double coils 22, each disposed eccentrically with respect to the center of said container. The operation of this device is the same as that shown in Figures l and 3.
In Figures 5, 6 and 7, li have shown still another modified construction wherein the container 23 is disposed horizontally, and two sets of double coils 24; disposed therein. As in the prior constructions the operation otherwise is the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a container `for the liquid, a coil disposed therein, means tor rotating said coil, and means for supplying to said coil a treating medium having a temperature different to that of the liquid to be treated, the relative positions of said coil and the inner wall of said container being eccentric.
2. An apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a container for the liquid, a coil disposed therein eccentrically to the aXis of said container, means for rotating said coil, and means for supplying to said coil a treating medium having a temperature dierent to that of the liquid to be treated.
3. An apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a vertically disposed container for the liquid, a vertical coil disposed therein eccentrically to the aXis of said container, means for rotating said coil, and means for supplying to said coil a treating medium having a temperature diiierent to that of the liquid to be treated. a
4. An apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a container having a smoothly rounded inner wall, a helical coil for the passage therethrough of a fluid medium having a teinperature different to that of the liquid to be treated and disposed eccentrically with respect to said container and means for rotating said coil.
5. An apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a cylindrical tank having an unobima-,eee
structed inner wall, a helical coil disposed in said tank eccentrically with respect to the axis thereof, means for circulating a treating iiuid having a temperature Vdierent to that of the liquid to be treated through said coil and means for rotating said coil.
6. .Ain apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a vertically disposed cylindrical tank,
a plurality of coils within said tank disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis thereof7 means for circulating a treating fluid having a temperature ditlerent to that ot the liquid to he treated through said coils and means for rotating said coils..
7. An apparatus for treating liquids, comprising a vertically disposed stationary cylindrical tank having a smooth, unobstructed inner wall, a closed helical coil extending substantially the height of said tank and disposed eccentrically with respect to the axis thereof, means for supplying a treating fluid having a temperature different to that of the liquid to be treated to said coil and means :for rotating said coil.
