This invention relates to boxes made of cardboard orelike material and has special reference to boxes having the appearance in plan view of two hearts placed in overlap- 5 -ping relationship so that one lobe of each heart is overlapped by one lobe of the other.

An object of the invention is to provide an improved box of the type mentioned wherein the side wall is composed of a single strip of a length equal to edge of the double that when said strip the distance around the heart-shaped 'sheet so is placed about said sheet the ends of the lstrip will be in adjacent or abutting contact;

and to provide in said strip defined lines for bending said strip in the sharp corners of t y he double heart-shaped sheet and about a sharp point so that the ends of all of said strips are necessarily and essentially brought together at a predetermined point along the edges of all of said sheets. In this way the assembly of the box elements is greatly expedited and facilitated and the cost of manufacture is largely reduced and the output correspondingly increased because of the novel construction and relationship of said parts. That is to say,

In the embodimentof the invention shown the box base consists of two sheets l and 2, each having a double heart-shaped contour vor form; that is to say, each of said sheets has two side lobes 3 and a central portion 4. rlhe edges of the side lobes 3 curve to intersection with the edge of the central portion d to form notches having sharp corners 5 in One edge ot the sheet 1. Between the sharp points 6 a notch is formed having a sharp corner 7 which is midway between the sharp points 6 and therefore on the extended radius of the curved edge oi the part e of the sheet l. The box side wall 11 is preferably formed from a single rectangular strip, one edge of which (isjcut'to form a plurality of tongues l 12. `'Ihe length of -lthis' strip is the saine or distance approximatel the lsaine as the around the e ge of the base .sheet 1- so that when said strip is bent around the base sheet -1 and into contact with the entire peripheral edge thereof the ends of the strip will of necessity and as a necessary consequence of such arrangement be brought into abutting contact or approximately so. 'Ihe strip 11 is formed with a longitudinal score line 13 l parallel with andladjacent to one edge of said st-rip'and said edgeis cut inwardly to said score line 13 to form the tongues 12. These,

tongues may be bent along the score line 13 and at right angles lto thebody of the strip, as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and extended and secured to the under side of the base sheet 1.. The attachment of the tongues 12 to the base 1 may be by Vmeans of a quantity ofeglue 14 placed along the marginal porthe oppositee ge of said strip. And this score llne 15 is essentially located so that it does not extend from any one of the tongues 12 but is-in continuation of one of the cuts or notches 16 between two adjacent tongues 12. In the embodiment shown this score line 15 provides a defined terminal portion 17 of the strip'll which is equal to the distance from the'sharp point G/to the sharpA corner 7 of the base sheet 1. 'Ihe base sheet 1 is formed with an outer transverse score line 18spaced from the score line 15 a distance exactly eqal to the distance from the Ysharp corner 7 to the other sharp pointa of the base sheet 1. so as to provide a defined p art 19.of the strip 11 between the score lines 15 and.18 exactly equal to the distance from the sharp corner 7 to the sharp point 6. 'I`lius,'the` two defined portions 17 and 19 of the strip 11. will fold against the edgesy of the base sheet lbetween the sharp points 6, while the strip 11* will bend outwardly along the score line 15 so'as to seat closely into the'sharp corner 7, the two deiined yportlns 17 and 19 diverging from each other along the diverging edges of the base sheet lsfrom the sharp corner 7 to the/sharp points 6. Essentially the score line 18 does not interse'ct lany one of the tongues 12 but said score line is essentiall in continuation of one of the cuts or note es 20 separating two adjacent ones of said-tongues 12. The cut or notch 20 is necessarily of such width that the two tongues 12 se arated thereby will not overlap when the si e wall 11 is bent about the sharp point 6. The wall strip 11 is also formed with two transverse` score lines 21 and 22 extending from the` score line 13 in continuation of two cuts 'or notches 23 and 24. It is essential that these score lines 21 and 22 donot intersect any of the tongues 12 and `it is equally essential that said score lines be in continuation of notches or cuts 23 and 24'separating a jacent ones ofthe tongues 12 so as to permit the wall 11 to bend sharply along said score lines 21 and 22 which constitute designations for placement opposite the sharp corners 5. It is essential that the distance from the score line 18 to the score line 21 be equal to' theA distance around `tliecedge of the` base sheet 1 from the sharp point 6 to the nearest sharp corner 5; and that the distance from the score line 21 to the score line 22 be Lequal to the distance around theedge of thebase sheet 1 from the sharp corner 5 at which the score line 21 is located to the other sharp corner 5; and

'that the distance from the score line 22 to the end of the strip 11 be equal to the distance from the sharp corner 5 at which said score line 22 is located around the edge ofthe base sheet 1 to approximate abutting contact with the opposite end of the strip 11 which, as

herein shown', is at one of the sharp points l6. In this arrangement the two ltongues 12 vat the ends of the strip 11 and which are designated by 12*L in Fig. 4, do not overlap but have their adjacent edges diverging or in clined so that both tongues may be engaged by the glue 14 and thus securely attach the ends of the strip 11 to the base sheet 1. In this assembly of the device a strip 25 of flex# ible material is extended across the point betweenthe endsof the wall 11 and attach/ed to the outer side of said wall. Thus, as will readily be seen by reference to Fig. 2, any outward strain or pressure exerted or applied against the inner side of the wall adjacent 4to either end thereof exerts a longitudinal Apull upon that portion of the strip 25 which is attached to the other end of the wall 11 so that considerable resistance to tearing is obtained.

After the box wall has been attached to the base sheet 1 in thel manner described the base sheet 42is'attached to the tongues 12 by glue or the like in the relationship hereinbefore described.. For this purpose a-strip ofglue. is applied to the surfaceof the sheet 2.l This strip of glue is spaced inwardly from the" edge of'said -sheet andis continuous, having thefzzshape or outline of thas'trip of glue 14 'masses' in order rmlv to engage the tongues 12, but not to extend outwardly beyond said tongues.

By reference to Fig. 4 it will be seen that the assemblyT of the box elements having the strip 11 formed and constructed as shown and ldescribed is greatly lexpedited and facilitated so that the cost of vmanufacture is largely reducedand the output correspondin ly increased and that these desirable results are obtained because of the essential elements bf the invention shown and described. The score lines 21 and 22 constitute demarkations or indicia'for placement of the wall 11 in proper position about and against the base sheet 1. For, these score lines 21 and 22 must be opposite or at the. sharp corners 5, the intermediatel portion of the wall 11 being curved against the intermediate curved portion of the base sheet 1. The remaining -portions of the wall 11 are curved and folded about the edges of the base sheet 1, the score line 18 essentiallyk being located-about one of the sharp oints 6 and the score line' 15 essentially belng located at the sharp cor, ner 7. Or the bending of the strip 11 about the sharp point 6 and alsogthe bending along the score line 15 at the sharp corner 7 essentially results in proper location of the score lines 21and 22 at or opposite the sharp corners 5.

I have described the structure of the box proper and it will be understood that the lid structure Ywill be the same andvFigs. 5 and 6 illustrate the box and lid assembled with each other. rlhe partspreviously referred to are practically duplicated in the lidand are numbered 1B, 2a, 3E, etc., in order to corre-- spond to theparts o the box having the numbers `1, 2,3, etc. y

It will bel seen that the outer base sheet 1 is attached to the tongues 12 byfafstening means such as glue independently of the fastening means by which the tongues 12 of the wall 11 are attached to the inner base sheet 2. Accordingly, by making the base sheets and the wall out of appropriately coated cardboard I am enabled to dispense with the use of cover sheets or theblike, leaving the outer edge 26 of the base sheet 2 cut or uns covered. This I'have designateda cut edge base. This construction may be the same 1n the lid or varied as desired. -The elements of this box may be assembled by a box-mab' ing machine of the type used for assembling rectangular boxes, modified/so that the machine would handle the double heart-shaped contours herein shown.

The invention may be Avaried within equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle thereof. I do not restrict myself unessentially, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l l. A box comprising a bottom wall having in one edge two notches each formed with a sharp inner corner and lhaving on their opposite edges two sharp points and having between said sharp polnts a notch provided.

A box comprising a bottom wall having in one edge two notches' each formed with a sharpf'inner corner and having on their op osite edges two sharp points and having etween said sharp points a notch provided with a sharp corner,in combination with a wall-forming strip having two deined parts located against the edges of said bottom wall from said last-named sharp corner to said sharp points respectively, and having at its outer side a score line op osite one of saidsharp points, said strip eilig bent transversely across said, score line and around thefmarginal edge oi' said bottom wall and sharply into both of said sharp -corners'of said iirst named notches; and having two transverse score lines opposite said sharp corners of Vsaid first named notches and along which said two score lines said strip is bent transversely and sharply into said sharp corners'of said rst named notches, said strip also having a longitudinal score line; tongues projecting from said strip along said longi# tudinal score line in a relationship to said score lines in which the spaces separating an outer wall having sharp corner/notches in one edge and sharp points on the opposite edge and securedrto .saidtongues in a relationship in which ."said sharp corners are in straight alinement with each other and with the respective sharp corners in the opposite edges of said two walls, said outer wall havdng its marginal edge projecting beyondthe outer surface of said wall-forming strip and guarding and shielding the score line along which said tongues are united said wallforming strip.

4. A box comprising a-bottom wall having two sharp notches in one edge formed with sharp corners and having two sharp points on its opposite edge spaced apart the same distance as said sharp corners; a wall-forming strip having in its inner side score lines which are opposite said sharp corners when said strip is bent around the marginal portion of said bottom wall between said sharp corners, and having on its inner side a score line which is opposite one of said sharp points when said strip is bent around one side edge of said bottom wall, tongues projecting fromsaid score lines guidone edge of said strip,

an outer wall secured to the outer sides of said tongues and having sharp corners and shar points in alinement with said rst-name sharp corners and sharp points, said sharp corners in said outer wall being' spaced apart the same distance as said sharp corners in said bottom wall and said sharp points being distance as said sharp spaced apart the same points on said bottom wall, and the marginal edge of said outer Wall projecting laterally beyond and guarding the union of said strip and said tongues. y

5. A box comprising a bottom Wall having two sharp notches in one edge4 formed with sharp corners and having two sharp points on its opposite edge spaced apart the same distance as said sharp corners; a Wall-forming strip having in its inner side score lines Which are opposite 'said sharp corners when said strip is bent around the marginal portion of ing the positioning of said strip about said wall to prevent said strip from ing placed in' a position in which any of said tongues crosses said sharp corners of said notches or said sharp point and permitting to be bent sharply into said sharp corners and around one of said sharp points; means securing said tongues to one side of said wall; an outer wall having sharp corners and sharp points in alinement with said sharp corners and said sharp points on said bottom Wall; and means other than the means which Secures said tongues to the bottom Wall securing said outer wall to said tongues in a relationship in which said sharpcorners and said said strip sharp points in and on said outer wall are y alinement with the sharp corners and sharp points in and on said ttom wall and in which the marginal edge of said outerwall' point which is opposite one of said sharp oints when said strip is bent around one side from one edge of said strip, said indicia and said designated point guiding the positioning d of said strip about'said Wall to prevent said strip from being placed in a position in which any of said tongues crosses said sharp corners l of said notches or said sharppoint, and permitting said strip to be bent sharply into said sharp corners and around one of said sharp points; and means securing said tongues to one side of said wall.
