UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
HUGH MULHOLEN, OF FOSTORIA, PENNSYLVANIA,
IMPRQVEMENT IN VIBRATINGIPROPELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,266, dated May 9, 1876; application filed December 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH MULHOLEN, of Fostoria, in the county of Blair, and in the State of Pennsylvania-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Propellers for Vessels and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a propelling device for vessels and boats, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a boat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a'plan view of the same.
A represents the hull or body of a boat or vessel, of any size or construction, in which is a cross-shaft, B, with crank d in the center, to be connected with the engine or operating mechanism in any ofv the known and usual ways. On each end of the shaft B is a crank, a, and these two cranks are set in opposite directions, as shown in Fig. 2. On each crank a are placed two pitmen or connecting-bars, b b, the outer ends of which are, respectively, pivoted to the inner ends of two rods, 0 C.
These rods are made somewhat in the form of the letter Z, and pass through suitable guides attached to the side of the hull A. The rod 0 extends toward and beyond the stern of the that is, one at the stern and one at the bow,-
on the same side, always move inthe same di-' rectlon, thus keeping the boat moving steady ahead, without vibration from side to side.
The buckets may be arranged under the] boat as well as at the sides, if such would be preferable.
Having thus fully described my invention,
whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the shaft B, having a crank, a, at or near each end, of two pitmen, b b,'on each crank, the rods 0 G, and conical-shaped hollow buckets D D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of December, 1875.
H. A. HALL, M. L. STowELL.
